William Tycholaz Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of William (Bill) Tycholaz at the age of 92 years. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends that he has left behind.

Bill was predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years Olga (nee Hetner) his siblings Metro, John, Mike, Steve, Peter, Wasylyna and Nicholas. He leaves to mourn his passing 6 children, Nettie (Don), Jim (Dolly), Myrna, Rosalee (Jim), Virginia and Loretta;  9 grandchildren (Leslie, Christopher, Conrad, Matthew, Jon, Andrew, Danielle Jacob and Julia); 10 great-grandchildren (Georgia, Erik, Juliette, Jude, Zachary, Riley, Emily, Megan, Anna and Ashton) and numerous nieces and nephews.

The youngest of 8 children, Dad was born to Ukrainian pioneers Wasyl and Maria (nee Lylyk) Tycholaz on the family homestead on May 17, 1928 in Duck River, Manitoba. He eventually took over the farm where he was able to raise his family creating many fond memories. While farming he also drove the school bus from Duck River to Pine River 1967 - 1976. Although growing crops and raising animals was in his blood, in 1976 the family moved to Swan River where he worked for the Town of Swan River and eventually retired in 1993.

He maintained close relationships with family and friends and enjoyed spending leisure time socializing. Never one to shy away from the dance floor, he loved to dance and invitations to country weddings were never turned down.  After retiring, many hours were spent at the Swan River Senior Citizen’s Centre playing pool or cards. He enjoyed fishing, watching hockey and listening to Ukrainian music from his large record collection.

Deciding to downsize was a big decision, however Dad and Mom gave up their home and large garden in Swan River to move to Dauphin in 2011. There they had several happy years reacquainting with old friends and making cherished new ones.

Dad will be remembered for his life of hard work, expertise in repair and his love of woodworking. Be it a bench, trunk, stool, shelf, decorative deer or rolling pin, one would often find evidence of his woodwork when visiting a relative’s or friend’s house.

Dad was a very good friend to many people in his life. He was always available to help out his friends and family in a tough situation with the right expertise and tools. He was quick to help anyone in need and made an extra effort to look out for his friends and neighbours.

Dad will be best remembered for the good-natured jokes and tricks he liked to play on people keeping them entertained and laughing;  his loyalty to friends; and above all, his dedication to family. For all of these and many other qualities he will be sadly missed.

We would like to thank all the staff at St Joseph Residence in Winnipeg for the compassionate care and treatment given to Dad in his final years.
