Walter Richards Obituary

Walter Frederick Richards
It is with deep sadness that the family of Walter Frederick (known to many as Wally) announces his passing at the Dr. Gendreau PCH in Ste. Rose du Lac, MB on October 6, 2021 at the age of 90 years.
Walter was born on June 5, 1931 to Jos & Doris (Knott) Richards.  He grew up with 2 siblings, Doreen & Robert near Shergrove, MB.  He started working at a young age, first for Eric & Beryl Taylor and then had many other forms of employment from Churchill to Ontario.
Walter married his soulmate, Ena Marshall on August 3, 1974.  Together they spent many happy years enjoying life in the community of Eddystone where they had many close friends.  Walter purchased some land north of Eddystone and started his ranching career, formed a partnership with his brother, Robert known as ‘Richard Bros.’  They continued to work together until Walter retired due to ill health in 1992.  He then sold his share of the farm to Robert but remained living on his home quarter until moving to Ste. Rose in 2005.  At this time, he sold the home quarter to his nephew, Kevin.  Walter and Ena remained in their home in Ste. Rose until they both moved to the PCH in 2020.
Ranching was Walter’s passion, especially haying and calving.  He also enjoyed trapping, fishing and hunting.  In later years when he and Ena had more time, attending auction sales was another highlight for him.
His humour entertained many people of all ages and I’m sure many will recall his favorite saying “That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.”  He had a willingness like no other to help his family and friends in their time of need.  His dedication to Ena and family was of utmost importance to him and the legacy he leaves behind.
Walter was predeceased by his parents Jos & Doris (Knott) Richards; his sister, Doreen Richards; half-sister, Lucy Martin and her son, Kevin Hill; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Adelard & Alice Marshall; brothers-in-law, Leo (Loretta) Marshall, Emile (Annette) Marshall, Norris Smith and Gilbert McIntyre.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Ena of 47 years; children Debbie (Keith) Howatt, Garry Newman, Kathy Wolf (Steven Stasiuk); grandchildren, Wayne (Jenn) Robertson, John (Janelle) Howatt, Rueben Houle, Meagen Abraham (Kyle), Harley Newman, Cole Newman, Maddison Wolf, Jasmin Wolf (Simon), Katelin (Travis) Olafson ; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Mackenzie, Matt, Abigail, Kaitlin, Sean, Julie, Parker, Cade; brother Robert (Jeannette) Richards; nephew, Kevin (Laura) Richards and their children Blaze & Raelee; his niece, Deanne Richards (Julius Mousseau) and their children Samantha, Marty, Ashley, Julius and their 8 grandchildren; special sister-in-law, Bertha Smith; brother-in-law, Henry Marshall, numerous other nieces and nephews, as well as many special friends.
A celebration of Walter's life was held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 2:00 PM in the Ste. Rose Community Centre in Ste. Rose du Lac, MB
