It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Virginia Wierbicki (nee Filipchuk) on May 19, 2025 at the Dauphin Personal Care Home.
Mom was born on June 25, 1934 and was raised in the Haig area near Garland, Manitoba. She was the oldest daughter of Metro and Victoria (nee Woronchak) Filipchuk. As a teenager she lived in Toronto, Ontario for a short time before marrying Edward Wierbicki on April 29, 1952. Together they farmed in the Zalicia area near Garland, Manitoba and eventually retired to Dauphin, Manitoba.
Mom was the heart of our family. Like farm wives and mothers everywhere, she wore many hats…mom, wife, laundress, cook, housekeeper, gardener, canner, farm hand (animal related chores with chickens, ducks, geese, pigs and cattle, hauling and augering grain, sentry duty during calving season). Her pride and her passion was her garden and every year she waited eagerly for the time she could put the first seeds in the ground. Then it was onto worrying about the weather, weeding, pest control, and finally harvesting and canning. When Mom moved to Dauphin, flower gardening took on a more prominent focus and there were many trips to garden centers to see the offerings for the new planting year.
Outside of our family, Mom was loved by many for her kindness, her sense of humour and for making people feel comfortable in her presence. At the Dauphin Personal Care Home she was known as Baba Virginia and the staff enjoyed teasing and joking with her. Each day when she received her medication and needle, she would thank the nurse, which prompted one to tell us that she was the only person to do that.
Mom is survived by her sons Marvin and Darin Wierbicki, daughter Janice Saccucci (Vince), granddaughters Olivia Saccucci and Alexa Wierbicki, grandson Mitchel Wierbicki (Farah), great grandson Magnus Wierbicki, Alexa and Mitchel’s mother Wendy Wierbicki (nee Lovasz), sister Florence Buchowski (Ted), sister in law Elizabeth Bilash (Peter), niece Beverly Waldorf (Pat), niece Rosalene Wenske (Tom).
Mom is predeceased by her husband Edward Wierbicki (Sept 25, 1930-June 25, 2021), son Brian Wierbicki (Mar 11, 1959-Mar 03, 2009), mother Victoria Filipchuk (nee Woronchak) (Feb 14, 1914-Apr 30, 2006), father Metro Filipchuk (1907-1963), brother-in-law Peter Bilash (July 10, 1924-Dec 10, 2006).
A special thank you is extended to Barbara Zalischuk and Stephanie Hadway, who were Mom’s Companion Caregivers. They treated Mom as though she was part of their family and that will always be treasured by our family. A special thank you is also extended to the Dauphin Personal Care Home for the care given to Mom and the many acts of kindness that were extended to her by the staff.
As per Mom’s wishes, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place and Mom (Virginia Wierbicki) will be interred at Little Lake Cemetery in Peterborough, Ontario with her husband Edward Wierbicki, and next to her son, Brian Wierbicki.
