Velma "Jean" Hamilton

Jean Hamilton at the age of 96 sadly passed away on August 28, 2025 in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. She was born in Holland, MB on September 17, 1928.  She moved with her family to Glenella, MB in 1933 where she lived until she obtained her Normal School Certificate in 1948 and moved to Gilbert Plains in 1949. 

She met the love of her life, Ronald Hamilton and they married in 1952.  While Ron farmed, Jean continued with her passion of teaching, obtaining a BEd and a BT.  Jean was a favorite teacher to many and often said that in the 33 years she taught, she never had a bad student.  She retired in 1990.

Jean and Ron loved travelling and had the opportunity to visit many places – Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, the British Isles, China, across Canada and many states.  She loved spending the summers at Clear Lake and did so until last year. Jean was heavily involved in the community, golfing, curling, the United Church, the Red Hat Society and Lions Club.

Jean is predeceased by her husband Ron in 2016, brothers and sister-in-laws. She is survived by her loving sons Gordon (Cheryl) and Tom (Brenda) as well as grandchildren Kristen (Stephen), Sydney (Adam), Ashley and Jenna; sister-in-law Elsie Alguire and many nieces and nephews.

Jean will be missed by all – she was a loving and giving person who impacted many lives.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Gilbert Plains Personal Care Home and the Grandview Hospital for the excellent care that they provided in the last few months.

A Funeral Service was held for Jean on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 1:00 pm from the Gilbert Plains United Church in Gilbert Plains with Rev. Luckson Mariba and Rev. Karen Kuzek officiating.  

Interment followed in the Chatsworth Cemetery.
