Sophie Babicz Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family announce the sudden passing of Sophie Babicz (nee Stasiuk) on April 6, 2024, at the age of 83 years, in Dauphin, MB.

Sophie was born November 17, 1940 in Postup, MB, to Michael and Katie (nee Maluta) Stasiuk. She was the second oldest of six children.

Sophie worked for 34 years for Home Care Services, preparing meals and providing care for the elderly in the community.  In her spare time, she loved socializing with friends and family.  Sophie was a faithful member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection.  She enjoyed playing bingo and cards with friends, and attending Dauphin's festivals.  She was an avid sports fan, hockey and football were her favorites; she was a season ticket holder for the Dauphin Kings for decades.  Sophie most cherished her visits with her grandchildren, Logan and Emma.

Left to mourn her loss are her husband of 49 years, Andrew; her daughter Sharon (Miles); grandchildren, Logan and Emma Pierce of Alexander, MB; sister, Victoria (Lorne) Woychyshyn of Winnipeg, MB; brother, Bishop Peter Stasiuk of Winnipeg, MB; and sister, Sylvia Balcaen of Marchand, MB; brother-in-law, Donald Babicz of Brandon, MB; sisters-in-law, Eileen (Lloyd) Jacobs, of Scarborough, ON; Hazel (Gary) Appleton of Nanaimo, BC; Linda Kostiew of Salmon Arm, BC; Debbie Kostiew of Vancouver, BC; Virginia Michaels of Airdrie, AB; Georgina (Roger) Pandher of Aldergrove, BC; and brother-in-law, Leonard Kostiew of Dauphin, MB.  Many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Sophie was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Katie Stasiuk; her parents-in-law, Peter and Helen Kostiew; sister, Joyce Pshebniski; brother, Orest Stasiuk; brothers-in-law, Alain Balcaen and Victor Pshebniski.

 Memorial donations can be made to the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection in Dauphin, or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or a charity of one's choice.
 
Prayers were offered on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at 7:00 pm from Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin, MB.

Funeral Liturgy was held on Monday, April 15, 2024 at 11:00 am from Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection in Dauphin, MB with Right Rev Bishop Peter Stasiuk, CSsR, Very Rev Father Oleg Bodnarski,  Rev Father John Sianchuk, CSsR officiating.  Interment followed in Riverside Cemetery in Dauphin, MB.  Pallbearers were Brian Pshebniski, Bonnie Bilay, Daniel Balcaen, Katherine Kubik, Melanie Balcaen, David  Balcaen.
