It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Pearl Nakonechny, who passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, surrounded by her family, at the age of 80 at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre. Shirley was born on June 4, 1944, in Dauphin, Manitoba, to Charles and Helen Ward.
Shirley was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, David, and a loving mother to her son, Jeffery. She also cherished her relationship with her son-in-law, Greg Gingras, and treated him like her own. Her family was everything to her, and she poured her heart into nurturing the people she loved.
Shirley’s professional life began as a dedicated nurse, providing compassionate care to those in need. After retiring from nursing, she transitioned to working alongside her husband, David, in their business selling bulk farm fuel. Shirley's commitment to supporting their customers and ensuring the success of the business was evident in everything she did. Her strength, kindness, and work ethic were deeply appreciated by both her family and the farming community they served.
Shirley had a love for travel that brought so much joy to her life. She and her family spent many memorable winter vacations in Florida, Jamaica, and Mexico, where they enjoyed the warmth of the sun and the adventure of new cultures. But Shirley's heart always returned to Las Vegas, her favorite destination, where she found excitement in the shows, the bright lights, and the thrill of the city. Whether it was a relaxing beach getaway or a lively trip to the Strip, Shirley embraced every moment with her trademark enthusiasm, sense of humour and luck.
Known for her infectious sense of humour and loving nature, Shirley created lifelong memories with all who crossed her path. Her family and friends were at the heart of her world, and she always found joy in spending time with loved ones.
Shirley is survived by her husband, David; her son, Jeffery; her son-in-law, Greg Gingras; her sister, E. Merle Paxton; and her sister-in-laws, Jan Nakonechny and Florine Cronk; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Helen Ward, her sister Annie Ward, and her siblings Marg Paxton, Helen Dawson, and Edwin Ward.
A private celebration of life has been held for close family and friends. The family thanks all those who have reached out during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkland Humane Society.
Shirley’s legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit and the memories of the countless adventures she shared with those she loved will forever be cherished.
