Obituary

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Sam Shulhan on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at the age of 93.  Sam would have been 94 on June 28th.

Sam will be lovingly remembered by his sister Stella Shulhan of Vancouver and was predeceased by his brothers Walter and Peter and sisters, Anne, Mary and Nettie.

Uncle Sam holds a special place in the heart of his niece Angie Pfeifer and her family, Bob, Cody and Bailey and will be remembered by nephews Kelvin Shulhan and his family(wife Donna and children Jonathan, Amanda, Travis, Trevor and Dexter)  and Michael and Ron.

And Sam will be very fondly missed by his neighbour Dianne Matthes, who was a good friend and support to him over the past 10 years and the family would like to thank her for always being there for him when we could not be.

Sam was born in Merridale, Manitoba on June 28, 1929 and spent his childhood growing up on the farm.  He built a home in Roblin in the 70’s and enjoyed many years with close and extended family.  Annually the brothers and sisters would get to get together in Roblin from Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver to spend family time.   Long weekends were spent hosting his family and doing what he loved; working in the garden, listening to music and celebrating their Ukrainian culture.

Sam got a job with CN rail starting out in Roblin, then moving to Edmonton and returning to finish his career back in Roblin.  After more then 25 successful years with CN, he retired and settled into retired life back home.

Once retired, he continued to work in his garden, but also curled in a men’s league in Roblin and enjoyed his daily walks up town to have coffee with his friends. He often came to Winnipeg to be with his sister and niece and her family for the various holidays, until it became too far a drive.

Sam survived cancer more then once, but this time, unfortunately he could not win.  He was a hard-working man, loved his alone time and family and loved his hometown of Roblin and Merridale, and was especially proud of his Ukrainian heritage.

A service will be held in early June, at Merridale Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Roblin Hospital for their care and support of Sam in his journey.

Uncle Sam, now you are out of pain and with your brothers and sisters, we will miss you and love you.
