Sadie George Obituary

Peacefully, on Sunday, May 13, 2018 “Mother’s Day” Sadie Pearline George (Quaal) passed away at the Dauphin Personal Care Home, just one month shy of her 98th birthday.
Mom witnessed many of the dramatic changes in Canada’s 20th century.  Born and growing up on a homestead with eleven brothers and sisters, near Rose Valley, Saskatchewan, just after World War I, Mom experienced a hard, yet eventful life.  Losing her father at a young age of five years, the family struggled on.  Running water, central heat, electricity, phone service, vehicles, were but a few amenities that Mom did without in her early years…but that was life and you made the best of it.  Mom’s tough Norwegian heritage; fresh, healthy food; great cooking; friendly hard working neighbors and family sure made up for it!
Mom headed to Flin Flon, Manitoba after the outbreak of WWII, where she gained employment at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company and met her future husband, our father, Gerry George.  They married in 1945 and raisied a family (Sharon and Sheldon) and the next 31 years were lived in Flin Flon.  Mom’s employment in post war Flin Flon was similar to most women of the time… caring for children and looking after the house.
When Dad retired they set off on a new adventure to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, (near Sharon’s family), which was home for 20 years.  After Dad died, Mom moved to Dauphin which was home for the next 20 years, with a brief 3 year stay with Sheldon and family in The Pas.
A life of 98 years without a doubt… memorable… the smell of fresh bread, pastries and main course dishes were daily occurrences ... a neat and tidy home was priority… as was her prim and proper personal style.  Whether we were going to the rink, ballpark, berry-picking or fishing, we were always waiting on Mom to get her hair perfect, make-up on and selecting just the right clothes!  Mom loved sports, especially curling, as a participant with many trophies and prizes for her effort, hockey, baseball and football as a spectator.  Her favorite show was “The Price is Right” as the grandchildren can attest to.
Never shy for a conversation or comment with family, friends and new acquaintances, Mom was the “Social Butterfly “even before social media became the norm.  Staying connected with immediate and extended family brightened Mom’s life.  In earlier years playing cards with her sisters, speaking Norwegian, which their husbands couldn’t understand,  and in more recent years visiting with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren (who affectionately call her GG) were highlights!
Mom will be forever in our thoughts and treasured memories.  Today we celebrate Sadie and the wonderful family she made and the traditions we will keep in her honor.
Daughter: Sharon (Walter Gingera d:); Sandra (Brian Barber) sons Nicolas, Joshua and Braydon; Ken (Anita) daughters Emma, Hannah, Grace and Isabella; Lee-Ann (Barry Harrison) son Brennan.
