Ruth Clark Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of their mother, Ruth (Ruthie) Marion Clark (nee Winfield), 96 years old, of Grandview, Manitoba on March 18, 2024.

Ruth was born April 8, 1927 in Grandview, Manitoba to parents Allen Ezra and Jenny Maude Winfield (nee Avery). Her siblings, Brother - Glen (Bud) Allen Winfield, Sisters - Merle Marlene Campbell & Donna Jean Glennie.

Ruth attended Ottawa School, grades 1- 8, then high school at Tamarisk school.  She taught school for a year before going to take her grade 12 (1st year university) in Winnipeg. She then taught 1 more year at Mossvale before going into substitute teaching.

Ruth married John William Whitfield Clark (Whit) in 1948 (deceased 1967). As a veteran he was awarded a quarter section of land, where they lived until moving their family to BC. Their children, Gene Whitfield (Muriel-Anne), Kathleen Ruth, Linda Colleen, Lyle Rutledge (Sonia), Jaynie Wilda and Danny James (Tracey) were born in Grandview. The 2 youngest Gordon Thomas (deceased 1989) and Margaret Ann were born once the family settled in BC.

Ruth spent her married life raising children, cooking, cleaning and baking. She later worked in a fish cannery on the night shift so she could look after her kids during the day. Later she went into retail at The Bay department store, a fabric store owned by a good friend and ultimately in a government liquor store. She retired in 1992.

Ruth was born and raised in Grandview, Manitoba then moved with her family to Richmond, BC in 1957, where she lived until she retired and returned to Grandview in 1994. She moved into the Villa Apartments where she resided for the next 29 years. She had some of the best neighbours and made many life-long friends.

Ruthie was an avid Bingo and card player, loved her Happy Hour whether at the Villa or at the Legion. She was an active member of the Grandview Drop In Centre, the Grandview Canadian Legion, Branch 14, as well as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Ruth was raised in the United church and baptized her children there before drifting away from it. Once she returned to Grandview she again became an active member. Reverend Steve and later Reverend Karen kept her engaged in bible studies, the senior choir and Sunday worship until she was no longer able to attend.

Ruth is pre-deceased by her parents, Allen and Jenny, her siblings, Bud, Merle and Donna Jean, her husband John William Whitfield and her youngest son, Gordon Thomas.

She is survived by 7 of her children, 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandsons all in BC. She is also survived by many, many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins, mostly still in Manitoba but also scattered into Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC.

A large part of her life which allowed her to remain in Grandview in her later years was the love and support of Lois and Dennis Lukey.

Ruth was celebrated on March 22, 2024 with a graveside service at the Grandview Memorial Gardens cemetery followed by a lunch at the Grandview Canadian Legion, Branch 14.
