Living in such a big family all of the kids had their own chores to do. Dad’s main chore was to iron clothes. They also had to take turns doing dishes. It started off by two siblings together, and when they would fight on who would wash and dry grandma Paul put her foot down and they had to do it individually.
One of the memories that auntie Dorothy has of my dad is that they were at the old place high jumping and then all of a sudden my dad took off running and left auntie Dorothy behind. She didn’t know why until she looked at the opening in the bush. That’s when she seen the bear. I’m sure all the siblings have very fond memories of my dad as they were growing up that they will hold close to their hearts.
Dad attended Walker school up to grade 11, which he then left to start the workforce because back then money was tight. On June 12, 1971 is when he married the love of his life Linda and that’s when they started their family their first son Garth came in November 1971 Jenny in ‘73 Audrey in ‘78 and April in ‘82.
Dad worked in various places throughout his life. He did some construction in Brandon prior to being married. He also worked for Nelson Cockerill Logging, he drove truck for Dienel Laliberte, Audrey Cockerill Logging, he ended at Blue Diamond Agra for Dave Grega would he worked for many years. Dad was the type of man that liked to work independently and was always focused on what he was doing. If he got pulled away or interrupted, he would sometimes turn and snap at you. We recently found out that these moments were called “Rene moments” at work, and us as his daughters and my mom, know all too well about these Rene moments. Dad was also known for his quick wit and joking responses. You always have to watch what you said around him because he could turn it around at the drop of a hat and make a joke out of it.
Some of the things my dad like to do was play his fiddle and guitar. I always remember when Dad was playing his guitar or fiddle, mom‘s dog Barkley would sit beside him and howl. We called this his singing, it was always quite the racket. Dad also took a lot of pride in his yard. He loved to do all of his own landscaping, they always receive compliments on their yard. Another one of his main things he loved to do was dance and he was very proud of our square dance group.
My dad was always the type that was comfortable staying home never had a desire to travel, well we finally got him out of his comfort zone and Audrey got him to go to Vegas twice, Niagara Falls, and I got him to come with us to Mexico and Jamaica. The one thing he always did want to see was the orchards where the fresh fruit was grown in BC. When Audrey was younger, she was referred to as daddy’s shadow, wherever you would see my Dad, you would see Audrey stuck to his side, but she would never say a word. If she would see him taking off somewhere she would yell at him. Where are you going? His reply was always “California”. So, one of her goals was to take him to California. The plan was to go there this spring, but because of the wildfires they couldn’t go, so off they went to the Okanogan instead where he got to see his fruit trees.
I could go on for hours and tell you all kinds of precious memories we have with our dad but we will hold these close and dear to our hearts we love and miss you Dad, until we meet again Rest in peace.
