Phyllis Plesh Obituary

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Phyllis Plesh (Balak) on January 21, 2026, at Dauphin Regional Health Center. She was 77 years old and passed away following health complications.

Phyllis was born on August 4, 1948, to William and Rose (Kwasnicki) Balak in the Rural Municipality of Gilbert Plains. She spent her childhood on the family farm and attended school in Drifting River and Gilbert Plains. For her final year of studies, she attended Dauphin Collegiate Technical Institute.

On September 16, 1972, Phyllis married Nick Plesh, and together they established their home in Dauphin, where they resided throughout their lives. Their family grew in May 1978 with the birth of their daughter, Kelly. As Nick was employed by CN and often away for work, Phyllis took on the primary responsibility for raising Kelly, ensuring she was actively involved in all aspects of her daughter's life and activities as she grew up. In December 2009, Phyllis's grandson, Aiden, was born and quickly became the centre of her world. Phyllis was unwavering in her devotion to Aiden, always going above and beyond for him.

Phyllis was dearly loved for her cheerful smile and caring nature. She took pride in her vegetable garden and the beautiful flowers that surrounded her home, especially her assortment of lilies. Phyllis enjoyed gathering with family and friends, hosting many nights filled with card games, board games, and laughter. She and Rosalie organized numerous block parties during the summer, creating memorable experiences for all participants. Phyllis was highly skilled in cross stitching, dedicating much of her time to this craft and producing numerous beautiful pieces throughout her life. Her handiwork was admired by family and friends, reflecting her patience and creativity. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Phyllis and Nick were well-known for their regular gatherings at the local Tim Hortons. They could often be found surrounded by a large group of friends, sharing coffee, stories, and plenty of laughter. These coffee outings became cherished routines, strengthening bonds within their community and bringing joy to all who joined them.

Phyllis dedicated much of her professional life to serving her community in various capacities. She worked at Dauphin Regional Health Center as a switchboard operator, where her skills and compassion made a meaningful impact. Physicians frequently relied on Phyllis to interpret for Baba and Gigi patients, ensuring that those who spoke different languages received the care and understanding they needed. Her ability to communicate effectively bridged gaps and provided comfort to many families during their hospital visits.

As a representative for Welcome Wagon, Phyllis greeted new homeowners, newlyweds, and new parents with warmth and generosity. She delivered baskets filled with gifts, coupons, and information from local businesses, making newcomers feel at home in the community. Her outgoing nature and genuine joy in meeting new people were apparent to all who had the pleasure of interacting with her through this role.

Later in her career, Phyllis worked as a cashier for Balak’s Auction Service. She spent many long, enjoyable days travelling with the auction crew, managing transactions and contributing to the success of each event. Her enthusiasm and dedication made her a valued member of the team.

In addition to her work outside the home, Phyllis provided babysitting services from her own residence. She fostered strong bonds with the children she welcomed, offering a caring and nurturing environment. The relationships she built with these children and their families were a testament to her kindness and commitment to helping others.

Phyllis was a lifelong supporter of the Dauphin Kings hockey team, rarely missing a game regardless of the weather. She and Nick regularly attended games together, and after his passing, Phyllis continued this tradition on her own. For away games, she always tuned in to the broadcasts to cheer on the team.

Phyllis is mourned by her daughter Kelly Plesh of Dauphin, grandson Aiden Lebel of Dauphin, sister Theresa Balak of Embrun, ON, sister-in-law Ollie Moshenko of Winnipeg, brother-in-law Morris Plesh of The Pas, and sister-in-law Irene (Larry) Paterson of The Pas. She is also remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Nick, parents Bill and Rose Balak, in-laws Alex and Mary Plesh, sister-in-law Sandra Plesh, and brother-in-law Ralph Moshenko.

Thank you to Dr. Kish and Dr. Rauch and to the amazing staff at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre for looking after mom.
