Pelahia Odut Obituary

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Pelahia Odut in her 98th year on Saturday, July 24, 2021. Pelahia was born fifth of eight girls in Karlikiw, Poland to parents Ivan and Anastasia (Rapawij) Hojsan.  In 1939, at age of 15, she and two sisters were taken to work on farms in Germany for the duration of the war. Her family scattered after the war years and she only reunited with four of her sisters in later life.  She met Hryhorij (Harry) Odut in a displacement camp near Ulm, Germany.  Sponsored by Harry's brother, Mike, they and their one year old son immigrated to Canada in November 1948.
Pelahia and Harry bought a quarter section of land and farmed in the Ashville area for many years.  Life was not easy in the early years and most of the work was done by hand and with horses.  "Baba" as she was known to many, was a hard worker.  Along with her husband Harry, she worked on the farm milking cows, raising pigs, chickens, and turkeys.  They also had a large garden and were happy to share with family and friends.  Anyone who stopped to visit never left hungry or thirsty.  The Ukrainian language, holiday traditions and faith in her church were very important to Baba,  and she passed those values to her family.  After Harry's passing in April 1996, she continued to work on the farm, with the help of her son Mervin, until moving to town in 2005.
Pelahia is survived by her three children, six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Stanley (Linda) Odut and family of Steven (Shelly) Odut, daughters Ceili & Alaina; and Kathie (Lance) Dann and family Dustin (Kendall), Twyla and Elyse, Dakota, Breanna (all residing in Calgary).
Mary Elliot (Rod Andries) of Brandon and family of son Scott (Natalie), their children Kayden, Aria and Ryder: and son Ryan (Tanya) all from Rivers.
Mervin (Anne) Odut and family of daughter Karen (Ryan) Rauliuk with sons Mitchell & Jasper; and son Mark (Whitney) with sons Easton & Brier, all of Dauphin.
Pelahia also leaves extended family of nieces and nephews and their families in Germany, Poland and Ukraine.
The family extends many thanks to the staff at the Dauphin Personal Care Home for the wonderful care during her stay.
