Pauline Nakonechny Obituary

Mom passed away peacefully at Boyne Lodge in Carman on Wednesday November 20, 2024 at 100 years old with her 2 children at her side. She was born in Pine River, MB on March 27, 1924 to Metro and Mary (Rumak) Kyaschuk, Ukrainian immigrants from Panivtsi and Skala Podilska in Ternopil oblast. On November 18, 1944 she married Nick J Nakonechny.

She is survived by her loving family: daughter Ollia and husband Ted of St Andrews, MB; son Hellar of Carman, MB;  granddaughter Alanna and husband Mike Esler, and their children Lia, Ashton and Isabelle from Slidell, Louisiana; granddaughter Lauren and her children Ben and Taylr and Lauren’s partner Ryan Sotheran and his son Carter from Sanford, MN; grandson Aaron and wife Sheena(Beaudin) and their children Nixon, Oaklan and Jensen from Carman MB.

She is also survived by sister Mae Hrechka of Brandon and sister Phyllis Barschewsky of Dauphin and many nieces and nephews.

Mom was predeceased by her parents Metro in 1970 and Mary in 1976, her husband Nick in 1997, brother- in- law John Hrechka in 2001, brother-in-law John Barschewsky in 2003 and daughter-in-law Delia Power.

Although it is difficult to get away and travel when there is livestock on the farm, in 1953 mom & dad made their first big trip in a 1950 chevrolet to BC to visit dad’s brother Pete and family and sister Ann Tymchyshyn and family. Other trips later were made to California and then Hawaii. But the biggest trip of all for mom was to Panivtsi, Ukraine in 2011, at age 87, where she met her first cousin Katerina Zahurska (Kyaschuk) and family and again in 2012 when she met Nakonechny family in Ivankiw, Ukraine.

Mom’s love of farming and gardening began at age 12 when she quit school as she was needed at home to help with seeding, harvesting and many other chores. Mom enjoyed gardening and always had a bumper crop of all vegetables which went into the freezer for the winter. She would fill as many freezers as there were around the house with baking (blue berry and apple pies, cookies and muffins) and a continuous supply of perogies all of which would be sent home with the children and grandchildren after a visit. Her flowers were second to none - in the outdoor flower bed in the summer and house in the winter.

The grandchildren were lucky to have visited the farm in Pine River many times and saw the cows, hogs, horses, chickens, and turkeys “live” rather than just “on TV”. They got to ride the snowmobile in the winter and quad in the summer and explore the neighboring abandoned buildings and hay loft of the big barn. All this culminated in Baba’s scrumptious meals which included homemade chicken soup with farm raised chickens and homemade noodles. We feel truly fortunate to have had her for so many years.

She lived on the farm until 2000 when the farm was sold and she moved to Dauphin. She moved to Carman in 2010 to be closer to her family.

The family would like to thank all the caring staff at Boyne Lodge in Carman who have provided wonderful care for the last 4 years.
