Olga (Maluta) Boychuk

Our hearts are filled with sadness as we announce the passing of Olga Boychuk. Even though she has left us for a better place, she will never be forgotten and will always remain in our thoughts and prayers. Olga lived a full life treasuring time spent with family and friends while always giving back to her community. Her achievements and successes came from hard work and determination. She lived life as a loving wife, compassionate mother, caring grandmother and successful business owner.

Olga was born in the Postup district of Roblin Manitoba to William and Minnie Maluta. Her early years were spent attending school in Shortdale and working in her parent's general store.  Many stories will be cherished of her meeting the train in Shortdale during the early morning hours gathering deliveries for the store. She married Bill Boychuk on November 7, 1948. Soon after they moved to Grandview and rented the upstairs of a home to begin their new life together. In 1952 they purchased the general store from Rupe Davis and 1965 built on a new addition doubling the size of the store which contained groceries, a meat shop and a clothing selection.  

Bill suddenly passed away in his home on May 29, 1971. Olga took over running the store until October 2, 1978, when she retired. Olga’s determination and hard work over that period of time was truly remarkable including long hours and typically working six days a week. Once retired, she began enjoying other adventures in her life. After seldom taking any vacations while working, she began to travel to many interesting destinations with different travel groups.  Destinations throughout the world took her to places in South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East. She always brought back interesting stories to share, many pictures and lots of post cards. She kept a journal of each and every vacation right down to the meals served, site seeing activities and hotel accommodations. 

Olga volunteered for the Grandview Health Care Auxiliary and the Ukrainian School committee as secretary.  In November of 1979 she was elected as the first Lady President for the Grandview Chamber of Commerce.  Olga was also elected to the board of the Grandview Drop-In Centre helping to organize many activities. She was also awarded a plaque in appreciation of 25 years volunteer service as treasurer for the Parkland Seniors Council (1980 – 2005).  She belonged to the Seniors committee that developed a new park in town. Olga loved her church and spent countless hours volunteering and singing in the choir.

In addition to travel and volunteering, Olga loved gardening, baking delicious apple pies and going out on a Sunday afternoon fishing trip.  She was truly a remarkable independent woman, full of life, and a loving and compassionate grandma.  Olga leaves behind one son, Tim, (Brenda) and granddaughters Cassandra (Scott Boyd), Ashley and Stephanie. She was predeceased by brother, Fred Maluta; sister, Mary Tyzuk; and infant sister, Alma. The family would like to express their heart felt gratitude to the staff of the Dauphin Personal Care Home.

Prayers were offered on Monday, October 7, 2019 at 7:00 pm from the Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin. A Funeral Service was held for Olga on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at 10:00 am from the St. George's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Dauphin with Rev. Father Brent Kuzyk officiating with Interment following in the Grandview Memorial Gardens & District Cemetery.
