Nicholas Hudyma Obituary

Nick Hudyma of Dauphin passed away May 1, 2023 at the age of 85.  He leaves to mourn Mary, his wife of 57 years, five children, ten grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.  His children were his greatest treasures; Mary Beth Dunning, Nick, Tanya Love, Kathy Zaplitny, and Steve.

Nick was born and raised on a farm near Rycroft, Alberta.  He was the oldest of six children.  After graduating from high school, he moved to Edmonton where he enrolled in accounting courses.  He worked for several years in the offices of several construction firms and served one year as secretary-treasurer of a small school division in northern Alberta, the youngest secretary-treasurer in Alberta at that time.

Quite unexpectedly to his parents and siblings, in 1962 he enrolled at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.  He enjoyed his studies there and graduated with B.A, M.A. and B.Ed degrees.

His first teaching job was teaching social studies at DCTI in Dauphin.  When the DRCSS opened, he transferred there and soon became the business ed department head.  He taught many students economics, accounting, and business law.  He enjoyed his students and took pride in encouraging class discussion.  He served as student council advisor for many years.  He always attempted to keep student fees low by organizing fund raisers such as the yearly citrus fruit sale.  He retired from teaching in 1998 but continued to substitute for three years.

Nick served as treasurer of Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival for a number of years.  He was also treasurer for the Ukrainian Orthodox Young Men’s Society for many years, doing the books for their weekly BINGO during the time they switched from cards and chips to paper and markers.

Cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
