It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Auntie Nellie on September 16, 2025 just 11 days short of her 94th birthday. She was smiling til the end!
Sofia Nellie Karazub was born on September 27, 1931 in South Bay, MB, the youngest child of Nicholai and Annie Karazub (nee Brignoly/Briginowicz) who immigrated from Austria/Ukraine in the early 1900’s. Nellie’s life was centered on farm, family and faith. She had wonderful memories of her childhood on the farm and her many years of farming with her husband Pete Weselowski to whom she was married for 58 years.
After retiring from farming Pete and Nellie moved into Winnipegosis where Nellie continued to grow a huge garden until she was almost 90. Nellie loved canning, preserving, baking, cooking, crocheting, doing crafts, coloring and most of all spending time with family and friends. For many years she was involved in the Winnipegosis Senior’s Centre. Nellie truly loved people! No one was a stranger to Nellie for long. Her home was always open and there was always room at her bountiful table for one more.
Despite numerous health challenges in her later years, Nellie lived in her own home until the age of 90. She believed in 3 square meals a day and continued to cook hot meals for herself until her very last day at home. Nellie resided at the Winnipegosis PCH for the past 2 years and enjoyed participating in activities of every kind from folding facecloths to drawing and painting and winning at bingo. She particularly enjoyed the weekly worship services and loved singing hymns.
Nellie was a longtime member of Holy Ascension Ukrainian Catholic Church in Winnipegosis. She had a simple but deep faith in God. She loved the Lord Jesus and in her recent illnesses expressed her desire to be with Him. Nellie was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Mary, Minnie, Tina; her brothers John, Bill and Peter; her beloved husband Pete as well as her special nephew David Weber.
Nellie took great interest in the lives of her family and friends. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families including her namesake, her great-great niece Nellie Dawn Weber who was born August 1, 2024. Nellie was thrilled to have baby Nellie and her parents Kyle and Mallory visit from Newfoundland earlier this summer.
Special thanks to Nellie’s dear friend Ruthie Wright for always ‘being there’ for Nellie when family couldn’t be; to Dr M.G. Penrose who so kindly cared for Nellie for many years; to Winnipegosis Home Care staff who helped Nellie stay in her home as long as possible; and to the staff and volunteers at the Winnipegosis Personal Care Home for their friendship and care of Nellie these last two years.
Nellie enriched our lives in so many ways! We were blessed to have known her and loved her. She will be greatly missed!!
A Funeral Service was held for Nellie on Friday, September 19, 2025 at 10:00 am from the Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre.
Interment followed in the Holy Ascension Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery - Winnipegosis, MB.
