Mary Quick Obituary

Surrounded by her loving family, (Margaret) Mary Quick (nee Aitken) passed away peacefully on Friday, November 28, 2025 at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre at the age of 82 years.

Mary was born on April 14, 1943 in St. Boniface, MB.  The eldest of eight children, she spent most of her childhood in Dauphin.  Mary attended Whitmore and Smith-Jackson Schools, and later graduated from DCTI in 1961.  She excelled at her studies and went on to attend both St. John’s College and Manitoba Teachers’ College where she graduated in 1963. Mary taught for two years at Ochre River School before marrying in June 1964.  Children soon followed with Warren (1965) and Michelle (1968).  She always considered being a mother to be her most important role in life. The family relocated often, settling in Dryden, ON, North Bay, ON, and London, ON before returning home to Dauphin in 1977 following divorce.  After upgrading at university, Mary returned to the classroom in 1979, teaching at MacNeil, Sifton, and Ochre River Schools, later retiring in 2009 after 33 years of service.  Teaching for her was a passion, not a profession, and she always made time to connect with former students and their families to keep up on life events.  Retirement was filled doing things that she loved: reading, knitting, playing the piano, doing puzzles, and connecting with family and friends.

Mary especially loved her grandchildren and always supported them in their endeavours, often travelling great distances to attend their special events.  She was honoured to witness the graduations of Collin, Tyler, Alex, and Sarah and the marriages of Natalie (Stosh) and Collin (Crystal).  Mary felt blessed to have three beautiful great-grandchildren: Sawyer, Olive, and Liam.

Humble by nature, Mary lived a life in service to others – always giving of her time and resources.  She showed great resilience as she faced and overcame many challenges throughout her lifetime.  Mary had a positive, optimistic attitude that failed to see the glass as half empty.  She leaves a legacy of love and kindness for others.

Mary is survived by her son Warren Quick (Jennifer), and daughter Michelle Urquhart (Scott), grandsons Collin Quick (Crystal), Tyler Quick, and Alexander Urquhart (Francine), granddaughters Natalie Welniak (Stosh), and Sarah Urquhart (Kaz), great-grandsons Sawyer Welniak and Liam Quick, great-granddaughter Olive Welniak, sisters Joan Nadolny (Barry), Beth Monson, Helen Aitken-Ritzer (Ted), and Dawne Aitken (Rob), sister-in-law Katharine Langille, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, Norris and Beryl Aitken (nee Hiddleston), infant brother George Aitken, sister Norrie Ann Campbell, brother Allan Aitken, brother-in-law Tom Monson, and infant grandson Travis Quick.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Special Care Unit of the DRHC for their warmth and compassion during her brief stay.  Their care and support brought great comfort to both Mary and her family.

A Celebration of Life was held for Mary on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 1:00 PM CST from St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Dauphin with Rev. Barry Nadolny officiating.
