Mary Adam Obituary

It is with great sadness that the Adam family announces the passing of Mary Adam (née Didychuk) on July 18, 2020 in the 103rd year of her life.  Mary was predeceased by her loving husband of 72 years, Aime R. “Pete” Adam, her parents, Nykola and Irene Didychuk, and 11 of her siblings.  She is survived by her daughters, Doreen Balchen (Bruce), Lorraine Adam, Marie Adam (Glenn MacDonnell), Karen Dreveski (John), seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister Elsie Brezden.
Mary was born and raised on a farm outside of Rorketon, Manitoba.  As a girl, she walked miles over a long field to attend the one room Edilene School.  Life was challenging at the time but food was plentiful and there were many social occasions with family and friends.
As a young woman she met Pete Adam, married him in Toutes Aides on January 19, 1937, therein beginning a lifelong partnership in family, business, and politics.
Following short residences in Toutes Aides, Winnipeg, Crane River, and Rorketon, Mary and Pete moved to Ste. Rose du Lac in 1949 to begin a business in farm implement dealership, where they lived for a number of years.  During this time they enjoyed boating and fishing, their trailer at Manipogo, and curling.  Four daughters had joined the family during this time.
Mary was a hard worker, maintaining a large garden and canning and freezing food in the fall. She was a constant support to her husband.  Mary made a significant contribution to Pete’s career in politics, often campaigning, and attending rallies, parades and events.
Following the sale of the Ste. Rose business, Mary & Pete moved to a farm near Ochre River.  Again, Mary helped with the haying and harvesting.  Her family knew they could always visit the farm for a wonderful experience.  During this period, Mary worked for a time at Chez Cloth in Dauphin and recounted numerous stories of harrowing driving on country roads during winter.
Upon retirement, Mary and Pete moved to Dauphin for a more leisurely life that included square dancing, social times with neighbours, and maintaining connections with the many people they had met during their political journey.  They loved their home and large garden and again it was a welcoming place for family.
After Pete passed away in 2009, Mary continued living in their Dauphin home, then in Lorray Manor where she enjoyed the company of many new friends.  Later she moved to St. Paul’s Home where she resided until her passing.
Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Her children and grandchildren fondly remember her generosity towards her family and the wonderful food she prepared for gatherings.
Mary was remarkably healthy throughout her life.  Her daughters called her the “Energizer bunny” for the many times she survived falls and setbacks.
She will be truly missed by all of her family. She was a wonderful example of the spirit to live.

In accordance with Mary's wishes, no formal service will be held.
