Martha Bessel, aged 95, of Dauphin, Manitoba, passed away at St. Paul’s Care Home on April 27, 2025.
Martha was born on December 25, 1929, in Radycza, Poland. Growing up as a middle child during the Second World War, was challenging. Martha was sponsored and then immigrated to Canada in 1948. She and Wilfred met and were married in 1959. They settled on a small mixed farm in Makinak, Manitoba where she worked along side her husband as well as was a wonderful homemaker.
Martha will be remembered for her many talents and hobbies, including sewing, knitting, crocheting, baking, cooking, gardening, and preserving food. She loved springtime angle fishing in nearby rivers.
Talents: Paint, hang wallpaper, household repairs, pitching bales
Sewing: Duvets, women’s dresses, confirmation dressing for her family
Knitting: Wool socks, toques, mitts, handmade sweaters
Crocheting: Cotton doilies, tablecloths, placements for wedding and birthday gifts, blankets, throws, cotton crochet snowflakes and crosses bookmarks (confirmation Bible), knit barbie doll clothing for great niece Darlene Hawryluk who later passed them on to her daughters
Baking: Everything from breads to Kuchens to Christmas wedding cakes for Karen’s wedding
Cooking: Loved to host Thanksgiving or Easter dinners at all their homes (McKinck Farm Home, Dauphin RM and the Davidson Home)
Gardening: Loved pussy willows/roses/pansies and German ivy
Preserves: Always had a productive garden and was never afraid to try new recipes
Hobbies: Loved to play Crazy 8’s, box cars, aggravation, crokinole
Martha enjoyed picking berries such as blueberries, raspberries and saskatoons
She poured her heart and soul into everything she did, leaving a lasting impact on those who were blessed to have known her.
Martha was predeceased by her parents John and Olga, husband Wilfred, sister Bertha and brother-in-law Bruno Rossin, brother Bruno and sister-in-law Frieda Roloff, sister-in-law Lydia Bessel, niece Linda Rossin and great-nephews Clinton and Cory Rossin.
Martha is survived by her beloved cousins; Hilda Inkster of Dauphin, Lily (Brian) Martin of Brandon; nephews George (Tamara), Heinz (Donna), Gary Roloff (Tannis); nieces Anita Daneman of Toronto, Evelyn Roloff of Winnipeg, Karen (Gerald) of Dauphin, Alice (Scott) Allen of Dauphin, Darlene (Allan) Hawryluk of Beaumont, AB; great-nephews Clinton (Jennifer) Rossin of Dauphin, Eric Dumond of Edmonton, AB, Ben Roloff of Winnipeg, Emmanuel Allen of Dauphin, Christian Allen of Dauphin; great-nieces Taryn Daneman of Toronto, Lauren (Jeff) Rutledge of Toronto, Natasha Hawryluk of Berlin, Lucas Hawryluk of Cochrane, AB, Erin (Luke) Love of Dauphin and Brett Bonk of Calgary.
Martha's legacy extends beyond her hobbies and talents; she will be remembered for her kind heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering dedication to those she loved. Her generosity knew no bounds, and she touched the lives of many with her warmth and compassion.
Martha Bessel will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace, knowing that her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Martha Bessel of Dauphin, Manitoba passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at the age of 95 years.
A Funeral Service was held for Martha on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 2:00 pm from the Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin with Pastor Howard Burnie officiating.
Interment followed in the Riverside Cemetery - Dauphin.
