Maria Farkas Obituary

Maria was born on July 11, 1938, in the village of Vaszar, Hungary to Mihaly (Michael) and Lujza (Louise) Nemeth. She was the first of three children.

Growing up in Hungary was difficult as the country was under communist regime. Despite this, Maria finished her schooling and University to become a teacher. Maria loved teaching and would miss it after she moved to Canada. Maria married her husband of 57 years in Hungary on June 20, 1964, and while Jeno came back to Canada to work, Maria, who was pregnant with her first child, stayed in Hungary. Their daughter Livia was born on March 15, 1965, in Winnipeg just a day after Maria came to Canada. In 1966 a son Michael was born in Lynn Lake only to pass away shortly after birth. A second son, Eugene, was born on April 25, 1969, and a third son, Bela (Bobby) on October 30, 1971.

Maria and Jeno raised their children in the Northern communities of Lynn Lake and later Leaf Rapids. Her children meant the world to her, and she made sure they had all they needed and were told they were loved daily. Maria would often say that her fondest memories were watching her sons play hockey. The entire family would travel to the hockey tournaments. Maria would sit with all the other hockey moms and cheer her sons on. Maria was a fantastic cook and always had extra food for any of her children’s friends that would come by. She was also adamant about having a clean house and made sure her children were properly dressed with not one wrinkle in their clothes. Eugene and Bobby had the cleanest and neatest hockey bags in the North. Maria would lay out all the damp equipment after every practice and games and wash whatever she could. Once dry, everything was put back in the hockey bags, the exact same way every time.

Maria and Jeno travelled to Hungary several times during their lives and even though Maria stayed in Canada, Hungary was always “HOME”. She was extremely proud to be Hungarian and was even prouder to raise her children in the Hungarian culture. Her and Jeno worked very hard to give their children the best life they could even after their children became adults. Maria was a very generous person and would help people throughout her life. Everyone loved her and considered her a friend. She loved everyone and taught her children to always be kind to others. She also taught her children to put family first and for them to remain close to one another even after her and Jeno were gone.

Maria was a stay-at-home mom until her two youngest were in high school. She worked as a school custodian for several years until she was hired by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting where she worked in the mill and later as a First Aid attendant until she retired in 1997. She was known for working harder than most men and that says a lot about what an incredible work ethic she had. There were many times she would finish her work and would go help others.

When Maria and Jeno retired, they moved to Dauphin to be close to their daughter Livia and family. Maria continued to cook the many Hungarian meals and bake the dainties that her family loved. She was also proud to have a beautiful yard every summer. Maria’s grandchildren, Ashley, Kayla, Marlee, Cole and Katelyn all held a special place in her heart. She loved them all and was so proud of each of them. Her eyes lit up whenever she saw them and she made sure to have their favorite meals. Maria’s grandchildren will fondly remember her for all the love she gave them and will miss her homemade soups and breaded chicken. Maria truly had a heart of “GOLD”.

Maria was predeceased by her parents, an infant brother, her infant son Michael and her husband Jeno. She leaves to forever mourn her passing and cherish her memory, her daughter Livia Johnson (Jeff, Jordan and Braden), son Eugene Farkas and son Bobby Farkas (Juanita) along with her grandchildren, Ashley, Kayla (Seth), Marlee, Cole and Katelyn. Also left to mourn is Maria’s only sister Anna, bother-in-law Laszlo, brother-in-law Bela, sister-in-law Adelle as well as extended family and friends.
