Lawrence Glushka of Grandview, Manitoba passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the age of 85 years.
Lawrence Glushka was born in Russell, MB on July 30th 1936. He was the only son of the late William and Irene Glushka. Lawrence was raised with his older sister Olga and younger sister Elsie on their family farm. He received his education at the Halton School in the Pleasant Valley district. He finished his education in grade 8. He left school early in order to help his father with the farm. Through the years, the family farm remained a central meeting spot for the siblings and their families for all occasions. A place filled with love, music, great food and laughter. Lawrence had a close bond with his family and took pride in managing the farm.
Lawrence married the love of his life, Lillian Leona Kowalchuk from Inglis, MB on June 24th 1961. He fondly referred to her as Lil. The couple spent 60 years together. They had a strong marriage and were completely devoted to each other. They were a true team that had a strong mutual respect and admiration for one another. Farming along with a variety of health issues posed many challenges for the young couple. However, their strong faith and commitment allowed them to persevere and provide a wonderful home life for their family.
The couple was blessed with two children Barbara Lea and Kyle William. Lawrence loved his children and maintained a strong presence in their lives. He was a devoted father who taught them to be kind, compassionate and hard working people. Lawrence was extremely proud that both of his children chose careers in the health care field. His children have fond memories of picnics, baseball games and Sunday drives with their parents. As his children grew up and started families of their own, he remained an important figure in their lives.
Lawrence was a loving grandfather to Richelle, Kayla, Dayna, Chase, Rylee and Shelby. As a grandfather, Lawrence could be described as caring, supportive and fun loving. The kids spent many summers with their grandpa doing swimming lessons. He loved taking his grandchildren to get treats at the local corner store. He also taught many of them how to ride a bike. Lawrence was also an uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was often described as a jokester. Many of them spent the entirety of their summers on the farm with him. No matter how busy he was, he always took time to play catch or include them in whatever he was doing. Lawrence loved nothing more then spending time with his family and sharing his many interests and talents with them.
One of Lawrence’s greatest interests was music. Especially country western and spiritual music. He was a talented singer and guitar player. Lawrence loved to share his talents with his family and community. He spent many hours playing guitar with his uncle Mike on violin. He also enjoyed singing in the church choir for 30 years. He especially enjoyed Christmas caroling.
He was a faithful member of both Petlura Holy Ascension Church and later when he moved to Grandview in 1994 a member of St Elias Church. He worked as a care taker of the church and kept the grounds immaculate.
Lawrence was also an avid sportsman. Hockey and baseball being his favourite. He specifically enjoyed watching hockey. He would scrutinize every play after a game. Lawrence enjoyed cycling and hunting. In his later years Lawrence enjoyed spending time with friends at the bake shop and playing pool. He was a man of many talents and interests.
Lawrence lived a full life. He experienced both hardships and successes. He will be remembered as a man who loved his wife and family deeply. He had a strong faith and an optimistic outlook on life. He loved to laugh and have fun. Today is day to remember and reflect on the ways in which Lawrence impacted your life and celebrate his memory.
