Larry Darrell Chartrand of Waterhen, Manitoba passed in Waterhen on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at the age of 59 years.
Larry was born on March 2, 1960 in Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba to Agnes (nee Johnston) and Leonard Chartrand. Larry lived in Waterhen his entire life. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Marion Johnston “Ga”. He received his grade nine education at the Waterhen School, and graduated grade 12 at Winnipegosis. After graduating, he worked at the Waterhen School in the Maintenance Dept.
In 1981, he started his Bachelor of Education, graduating from Brandon University. Throughout his 39 years of teaching he taught at Waterhen, Winnipegosis, Skownan, Gypsumville and Crane River. In 1992 he began a new chapter in his teaching career; he moved to adult education. With this position came new challenges, but many rewarding memories.
Larry included his boys in hunting and fishing expeditions that has created many memories. In recent years the grandchildren were also included.
Larry and Bonnie found great happiness in watching their boys play hockey around many rinks throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He was also sure to coach the boys when they got back in the vehicle on the way home. Larry was adamant that all the grandchildren learn to skate, and then he was travelling through the province watching his grandchildren play hockey. He loved to watch hockey with the grandchildren on TV.
Larry had a passion for local government and concern for the residents, serving many terms on the Waterhen Community Council in the capacity of Councillor and then Mayor. He served on a Board with the Manitoba Metis Federation and Northern Association of Community Council, NACC. He made many lifelong friends.
Larry’s hobbies and interests were; ranching, cooking, trapping, curling, fastball, fishing, hunting and camping. He will be missed at the annual Partridge and Deer Camp.
His “BABIES” were his world. He spoiled them rotten and the PRINCESSES had him wrapped around their finger. Larry and Bonnie had created an annual tradition with the grandchildren of taking them to the Dauphin fair which they all have special memories of.
Larry is survived by his wife, Bonnie of 37 years; his two children, Shane (Pam) Ciara, Carson, and Brody; Kendall (Jessica) Emi, and Ena; children of his heart, Albert (Charlene) Huhtala, Kailen and Braxen.
