Karen Martinez Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Karen Anne Martinez who left the world of the age of 70 on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the Broadview Centennial Lodge. Born on December 10, 1954 in Roblin Hospital. Karen was a cherished daughter of Peter and Emily Mysko (nee Styba) and a beloved sister to Dennis (Paulette) Mysko and Peter Mysko, and Aunt to Renay Mysko and Haley Lefebre and their families.

Karen ‘s journey through life was marked by love resilience and a profound commitment to family. A proud student at Sunny Slope Primary School, Roblin Intermediate School and Roblin Collegiate Institute where she graduated in 1972. After which Karen pursued her passion for writing at Red River Community College in Winnipeg earning a degree in Creative Communications. Her professional journey began in 1976 at Manitoba Public insurance where she worked for several years before transitioning to Corrections Canada in the 1980s. In the early 1990s she married Dan and Nureye of Winnipeg. They lived in Saint Norbert near Dan’s Mac store. Karen and Dan opened their home and hearts to many foster children, forming lasting bonds, particularly with Tommy and Tara. Along with the laughter of children you’d also hear one of their many pet birds chirping the barking of their dog, Rushme, and the thumping of their bunnies’ feet. In 2007 Karen adventurous spirit led her to Muskogee, Oklahoma. She married Dan Martinez, whom she met online, embracing a new chapter filled with love and companionship. Upon returning to Canada in 2010, Karen bought a house in Togo and commuted to Yorkton where she worked for a security company.

Karen had a deep love for horses, owning two beautiful companions, Aquarius and Gypsy. She was an avid reader, particularly of nonfiction and enjoyed playing the accordion and exploring the world computers. Her adventure spirit was evident in her driving as she expertly navigated the roads always knowing the shortcuts and never hesitating to speed up at yellow lights.

Karen strength and determination shown brightly, especially during the many health challenges she faced over the last 15 years. Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to Linda Craven, Enid Bayn and Julie Eyes for their support and care while she was in Togo. The family also wishes to thank the dedicated staff at Broadview Centennial Lodge, and the Yorkton Hospital for their compassionate care.

Karen Anne Martinez will be remembered by her kindness, her love for family and her indomitable spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. May she rest in peace.
