Josephine Smelski of Dauphin, Manitoba passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025 at the age of 93 years.
Josephine Jumaga was born November 13, 1931 in the Kosiw District, RM of Dauphin, Manitoba to Tinnie Kumka and Michael Jumaga.
She attended Kosiw School. After finishing school, she worked in Toronto, Ontario for a couple of years. In May 1951 she married Alex Smelski. They farmed together in the Keld area until they retired to Dauphin in 1998.
While living in the Keld area, she was an active member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. She sang in the choir and was a member of the Sisterhood for many years. She also belonged to the Community Ladies Club for 25 years.
In Dauphin, she was a member of the Church of The Resurrection, the Ukrainian Women’s League and of St. Paul’s Auxiliary.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband Alex in 2008; daughter Verna in 1977; grandson Kevin Peters in 2016; sisters Jean Magnus, Eleanor Marco, Evelyn Bell and Betty; brother Peter in 2022; son David Smelski in 2023 sister-in-law Elsie; brother-in-law Bud Magnus and brother-in-law David Marko.
She leaves to mourn her passing her children, Ray and Jeanette Smelski of Kelowna, BC, Kenneth and Helen Smelski of Calgary, AB and Darlene Peters of Saint Laurent, MB; grandchildren Jared Smelski, Alek Smelski, Gabriel Smelski and Ariel Smelski, all of Calgary, AB; great grandchildren Jonathan and Jason Smelski of Calgary, AB as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends and cousins.
A Funeral Service was held for Josephine on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 10:00 am from the Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin.
Interment followed in the Riverside Cemetery - Dauphin.
