Joseph Chamberland of Dauphin, Manitoba passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the age of 70 years.
Joseph was born in Montreal, Quebec.
He is predeceased by his late, wife Ruth Yvonne Catagas since August 20, 2004.
He is survived by his step-daughter, Sandra Lamirande (nee Tanner) and son-in-law Emery McKay (Pine Creek First Nation); grandson Kolt (Gina) of Dauphin; granddaughter Hope of Winnipeg; his son Ian Chamberland of Vancouver along with 6 great grandchildren Nova, Aaliyah, Anna, Amaya and Kolton.
Joe was a 60's Scoop Survivor, he live a harsh life as a young child and was abandoned. He was on his own supporting himself at the age of 14. He was a farm-hand, feeding the farm animals and cleaning barns at the crack of dawn. He was taught to drive the tractor and other farm equipment when they would break down. He received free shelter and food for his work until he turned 18.
He lived in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as a child. He eventually ended up in Winnipeg, MB in his younger adult years and met the love of his life, his wife Ruth Yvonne Catagas of Valley River First Nation. They moved to Calgary, AB where he worked as a Carpenter building cabinets.
Joe as a jack-of-all-trades, he was an electrician and also a plumber, he self-taught himself for his survival skills. When his wife became ill, he worked as a Care Taker in an apartment building in Vancouver, BC. He made his way back to Valley River and lived there for a few years and transferred to Pine Creek First Nation. He moved to the Elders Lodge in Pine Creek. He wanted to have his own yard, to sit outside and enjoy the nice weather. he then decided to move to Winnipegosis, MB renting a 3 bedroom house.
Due to his medical condition, it worsened with him having dialysis and finding out about his cancer in early September 2024, he decided to move to the Happy Haven in Dauphin, MB to be close to the hospital for all his medical appointments, dialysis and cancer. He found out that his cancer was terminal in November 2024. He then started to make his funeral arrangements and paid off his cremation and burial plot. Joe was an extremely strong-minded individual. He had accepted that his time was coming soon as he was given only 2 to 4 months. Joe did all his plans while he was still mobile and drove himself around.
Joe also enjoyed going to Pow Wows and participating at Sundance, he loved the Culture. Joe Loved his family and grandchildren, his great grandchildren were his heart-strings, he wanted the best for his great grandchildren and was very proud of them all.
A Celebration of Life was held for Joseph on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 2:00 pm from the Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin.
Interment followed in the Riverside Cemetery - Dauphin.
