Jerry Morris Balak

Jerry Balak passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at the age of 89 years at St. Paul’s Personal Care Home in Dauphin, MB. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings and his wife Maria (Mary). He leaves to mourn his passing a daughter, Victoria, nieces, nephews and friends.      
Dad was born in 1930 and spent most of his life on the farm where he felt most at home. The land was not the greatest but Dad was out working the land until he retired in 1985 and let the property return to its natural state. Mom and Dad would enjoy the many wildlife visitors that found refuge on the farm. He would often walk the property in the early morning, until the morning he encountered a bear. He still had the shirt with the claw marks on the back of it. After that he would take the tractor for his tour of the farm.
Mom and Dad moved to Winnipeg for a brief period of time. Dad was not much for the city but he did manage to enjoy small things like walking to the corner for his weekly lotto ticket. He was still hoping to win the big one!
He was diagnosed with dementia in 2015. He was able to be on his own with the help of a home care companion until his move to Dauphin in 2016, when he moved into St. Paul’s Home and resided there until his passing. He lost the ability to recognize those around him. Near the end his childhood memories were at the forefront. They were happy ones of being on the farm working with the horses and his family around him.      
Thank you to all the caregivers at St. Paul’s who tirelessly took care of Dad. A very special thank you to his companion Kathy who took him out for drives, and most importantly for ice cream at McDonald’s. His eyes lit up and he had a huge smile on his face when he went out.

A Private Graveside Service and interment was held for Jerry on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 from the Garland Union Cemetery in Garland, MB.  A memorial service will be held at a later date in the summer.
