Jennie "Jean" Komaransky Obituary

Jennie (Jean) Komaransky

It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of our dear mother, Jean Komaransky at the age of 100 years. Mom passed away on May 25, 2023 at Grandview Personal Care Home where she had been a resident for the past two years. Most of the staff affectionately called her Baba or Jeanie.

Jean was born on January 20, 1923 on the family farm in Silver Creek Municipality near Angusville, Manitoba to Charles (Wasyl) and Sophie (née Gensorek) Huta. She attended Balfour School until Grade 9. Unfortunately, she grew up in a generation where high school was not free and she had nine brothers and sisters who also wanted to continue their educations.
She often said that the nursing profession is what she would have chosen. Although further formal education was not possible, she was a caregiver for her entire life and encouraged her children to post secondary schooling.

Mom married Harry Komaransky on October 31, 1943 in Angusville, MB at the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church. They also had a second wedding reception in the Petlura District where Harry lived. They met while Mom was helping her sister Eva, who lived in the Petlura area after the birth of her third child. Even though Mom and Dad were from different religious backgrounds and had a ten year age difference, they married after three months and were happily married for almost forty-eight years until Dad’s passing in 1990.

Mom and Dad farmed and raised their three children in Petlura until they retired to Grandview in 1984. Mom loved the farm life immensely, everything from raising poultry, pigs and cattle to gardening and picking every wild berry and mushroom, depending on the season. She named every heifer or cow they owned and she was a tremendously strong and fast milker.

After they retired into town, she continued her farming tradition by having a huge garden. Her housework could always wait, if she could work outdoors instead. She didn’t need such a large garden but she loved sharing her produce with family, neighbours and friends. She came from a generation where nothing was ever wasted so every foot of the garden had to be planted.
Mom was a caregiver by nature. She ran errands for many neighbourhood senior ladies when they first moved into town. She willingly picked up their mail, bought groceries, planted gardens or did wellness checks. She gladly gave her time to help a neighbor, babysit her grandchildren or volunteer at her church. She was the treasurer for many years at the Grandview Orthodox Church. She also loved singing in church choirs and she had very fond memories of going caroling with church members for fundraising.

Most local people remember Mom for perogy making - she made and sold thousands over her lifetime. She enjoyed conversing with everyone who came to pick up their order and often they would stay for a cup of tea or coffee and have a visit. She loved to cook and bake, and her grandchildren will always remember her cinnamon buns, beet rolls, cheese rolls and borscht. They could never leave her home empty handed or hungry.

Mom was fiercely independent. She drove her car until she was 90 years old and lived in her own house until she was 98 years of age when declining health made a move into the Care Home a necessity.

Over the years, Mom enjoyed many hobbies - knitting, sewing, crocheting, embroidery and quilting. Reading was especially enjoyable which she missed very much with her advanced macular degeneration. She was still fond of playing cards even mere weeks before her death. It was difficult for her to see the cards, took longer to count points and she tired easily but she enjoyed the game none the less. Playing cards was lifelong passion with many happy memories.

Jean was predeceased by her husband Harry Komaransky, parents Charlie and Sophie Huta, siblings and spouses Mike (Helen), Anne (Mike) Humenny, Tony (Mary), Steve, Mary (Nick) Boryskavich, Eva (Paul) Lesiuk, Nick (Lena), John (Cassie),Harry and son-in-law Bruce Beasley.

Surviving to cherish many fond memories are daughter Wilma Beasley of Winnipeg, MB, Lawrence (Rejeanne) Komaransky of Provost, AB and Marie-Anne (Blaire) Cairns of Grandview, MB.
Four grandchildren Steve (Marla) Komaransky, Lisa (Newton) Komaransky, Pierce (Amy) Cairns and Lance (Elana) Cairns.
Ten great grandchildren Sausha, Gage, Emanuel, Kail, Taj, Atticus, Lexington, Harrison, Savannah and Zaelyn.
And numerous nieces & nephews.

Funeral service was held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Grandview United Church at 10:30 am with Rev Karen Kuzek officiating.
A private interment service was held at Grandview Memorial Gardens & District Cemetery.  The memorial luncheon was served by Grandview Legion Ladies in the Grandview Legion Hall immediately after the church service.
