Jeanne Wilson Obituary

Surrounded with the love and presence of her children and grandchildren, as well as Father Michel, Jeanne crossed into the kingdom of Heaven on March 17, 2024. Awaiting her heavenly arrival was her loving husband Dennis and her parents, Albert and Claire Vermeylen.

Jeanne was born in Boggy Creek, the second of four children. The home was filled with the sounds of music. She played guitar and sang. Her voice equally suited to hymns as well as Everly Brothers songs. Dances at Sam’s Dance Spot provided Saturday night entertainment while Sundays were for Mass. Jeanne pondered becoming a nun.

As a young adult she moved to Dauphin for work. It was at the bowling alley she would meet her Dennis, a young accountant from Yorkton Saskatchewan. So much for becoming a nun. The couple married June 5, 1965. They welcomed baby Kirk in March of 1966. Their tiny Dauphin apartment was not big enough for their growing family. They moved to Gilbert Plains where they would live in the first of three houses on Heath Avenue over the next 50 years. June 1969 the Wilson family was complete with the addition of baby Angela.

Family life was filled with sleepy Saturdays, summers with friends at Child’s Lake seasonals and trips to see the kids’ Grandparents. Jeanne spent her days raising her kids and working at Cameron’s store while attending church in Gilbert Plains or Grandview. In the 1980s with her children growing it was time to focus on her career path, which turned out to be her calling. Jeanne succeeded in obtaining her GED and her LPN in 1983. Her first nursing job was at the Grandview Care Home. While she worked she continued the pursuit of her RN diploma. A shortage of nurses meant she was denied education leave. That was an obstacle but not a barrier. She worked her care home shift in Grandview then hopped in a car with fellow nurse Les  and caught some sleep before her clinical training shift in Winnipeg.  Her next workplace was Dauphin Hospital starting on the long term care ward and finishing her career on the Medicine ward. Jeanne had an interest in palliative care and had the compassionate touch to provide  peace and comfort in the difficult hours and days that lead to passing.  It is fitting that it was the very ward she worked on that cared for her in her final days. She would be impressed with the personalized care given by the staff, in particular Meghan and Jenna.

Over time Jeanne and Dennis’ family of four grew. In 1993 Kirk married Debbie (Tarrant) of Dauphin and Angie married Barry Yakiwchuk of Winnipeg in 1996.  The exciting role of Grandma began with the birth of Brooklynn, followed by Shayla, Collin, Lauren, and completed with the arrival of Maya.

Grandma’s house meant homemade chocolate chip cookies, endless snack opportunities and peach juice pouches on hand regardless of the destination. Incapable of saying no to her grand babies, Jeanne spent countless hours at playgrounds, parks, and pools.

Dennis and Jeanne bought a camper and spent time with the grandkids at Lilac Resort. They would also travel around golfing new courses in the province.  Their favourite golf course remained the scenic course in little old Gilbert Plains.   When they weren’t on the golf course they could be found having coffee at The Firepit.

Despite the loss of Dennis in 2008 life had to go on. Jeanne continued to pick up shifts in the familiar Medicine ward and keep in touch with her nurse friends Jo, Lizamma and Marg for coffee outings and movie nights. The house in Gilbert Plains, built by Dennis, was full of memories but no longer filled with people. After much debate she moved to Mountainview Villa in Dauphin in 2020. She felt safe in her secured building, extended her social circle and was now close to the walking track and to her coffee buddies. Most of all she was next door to the Catholic Church. Mass and bible study were part of the new routine. It was not uncommon to be handed a bottle of Holy Water, a prayer card or a medallion for protection from illness or safety while travelling. Her most recent accomplishment was using her church connections to make good and sure her youngest grandchild received the Sacrament of Confirmation and was her sponsor. Nothing would please her more than seeing a pew full of her family. Our family will miss her earthly presence but already know she will be with us from the other side. Comfort comes from knowing she is reunited with her Dennis.

Lovingly remembered by son Kirk (Debbie) Wilson, granddaughters Shayla, Lauren and Maya of Roblin. Daughter Angie (Barry) Yakiwchuk, grandchildren Brooklynn and Collin Yakiwchuk of Headingley. Siblings Albert (Eileen), Huguette, Danny (Melaney) Vermeylen all of Winnipeg   Brother in law Trevor (Vicky) Cherry of Yorkton, sister in law Val (Terry) Bassingthwaite of Alberta, and many nieces and nephews, and cousins.
