Jean Prokopowich Obituary

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Prokopowich (nee Burchuk) on November 26th, 2022, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jean was born in Weiden, Manitoba, on October 20th, 1934, to Minnie and Nick Burchuk. Jean grew up on the farm with her 5 brothers and 3 sisters. Life was difficult but it was a happy home filled with cherished memories.

Jean met the love of her life, Boris Prokopowich, while teaching in Gleneden School. They were married on July 25th, 1957, and they remained inseparable until her passing. Their marriage was one of love, friendship and respect. Throughout their life together Jean and Boris enjoyed the outdoors, entertaining friends and family,  long drives in the country and a good game of cards. They also loved to spend time in Clear Lake with their daughters and their families.

Jean was a lifelong learner who dedicated herself to teaching elementary school students for 28 years. Her passions included reading, gardening, cooking, and volunteering in the community and her sharp mind never ceased to amaze us. But, her greatest joy was her 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Baba was always making their favourite dainties and keeping abreast of their activities and accomplishments. She was very proud of them. Jean was a faithful parishioner of Holy Redeemer Ukrainian Catholic Church. She served on several church and community committees, including the Hospital Auxiliary, of which she was very proud.

Jean is survived by her husband of 65 years, Boris, her daughters Joanne Campbell (Gord), Judith Williamson (John), her 4 grandchildren, Ian (Talia), Katie, Grant (Jessica), Eric (Kaitlyn), and her 2 great-grandchildren, Charlie and Leo. She is also survived by her brothers Bill, Peter (Gertie), Mike, Wally (Jean), her sisters Victoria and Olga, sisters-in-law Olga, Wanda and Edna and many nieces and nephews. Having lived in Toronto, Sault Ste. Marie, Winnipeg, and Roblin, Jean also leaves behind many lifelong friends.

She was predeceased by her parents Minnie and Nick Burchuk, in-laws Nick and Katie Prokopowich, an infant sister Anne, her sister Mary, and her brother Alex, brothers-in-law Tony Stratuliak, Johnny Kolochuk, Lawrence Kostiuk, Matt Diduck, Russell and Walter Prokopowich, sisters-in-law Marian Burchuk, Ursula Burchuk, and nephew Dale Kolochuk. Jean will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at both Cancer Care Russell and the Roblin District Hospital.  A special thank you to Danielle and Lisa for their compassionate care during Jean’s time spent in Russell.

Cremation has occurred and a service will take place at a later date, as per Jean’s wishes.

Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to Expanding Community Cancer Care (ECCC), Bag Service #2, Russell Health Centre, Russell, Manitoba, R0J 1W0 or the Roblin Catholic Cemetery, Box #1449, Roblin, Manitoba, R0L 1P0.
