It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the peaceful passing of Hazel Beryl (Hicks) Basaraba on Thursday, June 25th, 2020 at Fred Douglas Lodge in Winnipeg, MB.
Hazel was born 98 years ago on May 28th, 1922 in Gilbert Plains, MB. Hazel grew up on the family farm in Gilbert Plains and went on to raise her own family on her own family farm she shared with her beloved husband of 40 years, Nicholas Basaraba. Hazel and Nick where married on December 26th, 1946. Hazel and Nick had two children, Barry and Bonnie who they loved very much and would do anything for.
Hazel and Nick farmed together in the Gilbert Plains area until they moved to Grandview in 1980. In 1982 Hazel moved to Dauphin and eventually to Winnipeg in 2005 to be closer to her daughter Bonnie.
Hazel loved her family very much and always looked forward to the many visits and talks on the phone. You never left her home hungry. Hazel loved to bake, and she loved to cook. Her kitchen table was always full. She also made the best pickles. Everyone loved her pickles and she had no problems sharing her recipe, but they never came close to what she made. Gardening was another love of Hazel’s. Did not matter if she was on the farm or in her house in Dauphin, she had a big beautiful garden. And the flowers, Hazel loved flowers of all kinds. Hazel was also a wonderful seamstress. She could make anything. From dresses, to curtains to quilts. Many of her grandchildren were fortunate to have some of the blankets she would make for them. Another love Hazel had was reading, she could sit all day and read. She liked westerns most of all and to watch old western movies.
Hazel was very much loved by her family and will be greatly missed. Hazel is survived by her daughter Bonnie Cason, daughter-in-law Marlene Basaraba. Eight Grandchildren, Robert Cason, Nicole (Blaine) Perih, Tyler (Darla) Basaraba, Cheryl (Dan) Jorgenson, Kevin Basaraba, Pamela Cowie, David Basaraba, Leigh-Anne (David) Anderson.
