Gordon Walker Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Gord Walker announces his passing on July 18, 2025 at the age of 91.

Gord was born in Pilot Mound, Manitoba. He was the second youngest of six boys. His father passed away when he was only ten years old and his mother Kathryn Walker (Molly) raised the six boys on her own. Gord attended high school in Pilot Mound where he met the love of his life, Phyllis Weeks. After graduating high school, they both relocated to Winnipeg, where Gord began working in the packaging department at Eatons. Phyllis was accepted into registered nurse’s training and residence. Gord and Phyllis married in 1954 at the MacKenzie United Church near the family farm where Phyllis was raised. Gord and Phyllis had three children, Bruce, Doug (Tag) and Patti. They lived in Winnipeg until 1966 and then the family made their way to Dauphin, MB via Pilot Mound. Gord chose a career in social work and attended college in Brandon, MB. After 30 years of dedicated service in this profession, Gord retired from his position as Area Director at the Parkland Human Resources Opportunity Centre where he made many life-long friends.

To say that Gord was a sports fan is an understatement. He loved all sports. Gord started curling in Winnipeg and continued after he moved to Dauphin. He joined many leagues and played in numerous bonspiels. A multitude of curling trophies lined the shelves at the Walker household. His participation in the sport also included years of volunteering at the 1985, 2007 and 2012 Provincial Championships held in Dauphin. In 1985, he was the Officials Chairperson. In 2000, he competed in the Legion National Curling Championship in Alberta. He won, with his team, the 2005-2006 Manitoba Masters Provincial Curling Championship and went on to the Canadian Open Championship held in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. Gord was awarded a Dauphin Curling Club life-time membership in 2019 with 48 years of membership. In 1992, Gord and Phyllis built a home at the Dauphin Lake golf course and began playing golf regularly. They were also great baseball fans and planned many vacations around professional baseball games. Gord also loved fishing, especially the trips to Cranberry Portage with his buddies.

Gord was a member in good standing for 51 years at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 20 in Dauphin and was honored to receive a life-time membership in 1998. He held numerous executive positions at the Dauphin Branch and Provincial Command, including President and so many more. He also enjoyed numerous mornings of cards, coffee and camaraderie at the Branch.

He is lovingly remembered by his three children: Bruce Walker (Janice), Doug Walker (Lori) and Patti Walker (Al McKeeman).

His legacy lives on through his grandchildren; Nichole Walker Lumax (Bert Sutherland), Jesse Walker (Katie), Kody Walker (Becky), Myla Walker and Lisa Kelly (Andrew); his great-grandchildren Meghan Lumax (Mark), Brittany Lumax, Jordan Lumax, Ty Walker, Cayden Harris, Carson Stanton, Georgia Kelly and Bennett Kelly; as well as his great-great grandchildren Sierra and Casey Slepicaa.

He is also survived by his brother Don Walker; sisters-in-law Bea Sheffield and Linda Heasley; along with numerous nieces nephews and cousins.

Gord will be remembered for being a gentleman, his generosity, his devotion to his community, his sense of humor, his knack for public speaking and leadership and above all his love of family and friends.
