Gordon Martin Obituary

Gordon Martin of Grandview, MB passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at the Grandview Personal Care Home, just 3 days before his 93rd birthday.

Gordon was born at home on May 10, 1926 in the Rural Municipality of Grandview, MB.  He was the oldest child of Ernest and Hattie Martin.  Gordon attended Tamarisk School.

In 1950 Gordon married Anne Yakobovich and they farmed a quarter section of land in the Locksley District.  In the early years they had to work off the farm, which took them as far away as Kitimat, British Columbia.  They eventually purchased Anne's father's quarter section of land.

Gordon enjoyed farming and everything that it entailed.  In the early years when money was tight, he learned to be very handy, repairing equipment as needed, building on to the house, building the barn, chicken house and granaries.  Gordon and his brother Leslie each had their own farms but helped each other with planting and harvest and anything else that needed doing on the farms.

In 1989 Gordon and Anne moved into their new home in Grandview, and then fully retired from farming in around 1992.  Gordon continued to make regular trips out to the farm, tending the garden they still planted there and making sure the farm yard was maintained.

Gordon was the family photographer.  He always had his camera in hand and took great pleasure in documenting any occasion.  When computers became more common Gordon was quick to check out this new technology and he spent many hours learning and becoming quite proficient with his computer.

Gordon and Anne loved to travel throughout Canada and the United States.  One of their favorite trips was up the Alaska Highway to Yukon and Alaska and back down through central British Columbia.

Gordon's life centered around his family and friends.  Gordon was a man of few words but with strong values and convictions.  He had a dry sense of humour that sometimes would catch you off guard.  He loved having family come to visit and wanted to know that everyone was doing well.

Gordon leaves to mourn his passing, his daughter Judy (Patrick), his son Rick (Renee); Barb Komar; 6 grandchildren - Eric, Carrie (Lonny), Marianne, Shauna (Shawn), Aaron, Kyle; 4 great grandchildren - Lane, Sara, Ayden and Avalynne; his brother-in-law William; sister Betty; and many nieces and nephews.

As per Gordon's wishes, cremation took place and a celebration of life for both Gordon and his wife Anne (who predeceased Gordon on April 26th, 2019), will take place at a later date.

Donations in memory of Gordon Martin may be made to the Parkinson's Society of Manitoba, 414 Westmount Drive Winnipeg, MB R2J 1P2.
