Gerald Shumanski Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Gerald “Jerry” Shumanski on April 4, 2025 at the age of 85, with family at his side.

Jerry was born in Dauphin on November 22nd, 1939, to Fred and Anne Shumanski (Stokotelny). In June of 1964, he married the love of his life, Donna Dmytruk. Jerry was a true entrepreneur, beginning his career at F and J Automotive and Electrical Supplies with his father. He then helped operate Jerry’s Night Spot, which hosted many parties and weddings. Jerry and Donna then started ServiceMaster, a restoration company serving the Parkland. In 1987, they started Down Town Drycleaners, successfully operating it until their retirement.

During his lifetime, Jerry had a love for sports- especially hockey, curling and baseball. In 2002, after many years of dedicated play as a shortstop for the Dauphin Redbirds, during which he won numerous championships and all-star titles, he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. Following his retirement as a player, Gerry offered his time to coaching the Redbirds.

Jerry enjoyed spending time at the lake with his family and friends. Jerry loved fishing, cheering for his favourite sports teams and playing word search games on his iPad. One of his favourite past times was watching his grandchildren enjoy their water sports. Through the years, Donna and Jerry looked forward to their many winter vacations travelling to Las Vegas, Disneyland, Hawaii, Jamaica, Venezuela, and Mexico.

They were blessed with five children: Charlene (Troy) Vendramin, Michelle (Guy) Bordian, predeceased by their son Kevin Gerald in 1974, Shawna-Lee (James) Marcynuk and Marnie (Craig) Johnson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Donna: daughters Charlene (Troy) Vendramin, Michelle (Guy) Bordian, Shawna-Lee (James) Marcynuk and Marnie (Craig) Johnson: his sister, Marlene Stephenson, brother-in-law Don (Barb) Dmytruk; and grandchildren Jordann and Kennedi Vendramin; Tanner, Blaire (Colten), Kamryn and Abbey Bordian; Ethan and Carter Marcynuk; and Owen, Seth and Sloane Johnson.

Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Anne Shumanski; son Kevin Shumanski; in-laws Alex and Paulina Dmytruk; sisters-in-law Vern Woelfle and Elsie Allan; brother-in-law John Dmytruk, Don Woelfle, Bob Allan and Wayne Stephanson.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Reed and Dr. Mathieson. A special thanks to all the homecare workers that cared for Jerry, allowing him to spend more time at home.

As per Jerry’s wishes, cremation has taken place in a private family service will be held with Father Brent Kuzyk officiating.

If family and friends so desire, a donation in memory of Jerry may be made at a Charity of One's Choice.
