George Bergen Obituary

On March 11, 2025, George Bergen passed away peacefully at the age of 87 with family by his side at St. Boniface Hospital.

He is survived by his daughters Karen (Charles) Lage and Dorothy (John Frank) Morin and 11 grandchildren; Matthew, Allison, Lorilei, Nicole (Sébastien), Natalie (Benjamin), Natasha (Yann), Jessie (Melanie), Mégan (Phillipe), Louis-David (Gabriela), Joseph-Caleb (Camila) and Léanne (Caleb) and 19 great grandchildren. His siblings; Corny, Martha, Albert, Elfrieda, Abe and Paulette, Tina, Anita and Dave and sister-in-law Teri.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Laurie Bergen (Warkentin), father Abram, mother Maria, brothers Jacob and Jake and sisters-in-law Mary-Ellen and Catherine.

George lived a life of service to his family, his community and his church.

George was the second of nine children born in South Bay (on a farm). They moved to Bicton Heath where he attended church and a one-room schoolhouse, doing “half his 12” (Grade 6). He then moved to Winnipegosis where he raised a family and built a business, one of three garages owned by the Bergen brothers, named George’s Service.

He was much loved and appreciated by the community having been a fireman, driver of the first pink fire truck in Canada, ambulance attendant and driver, town counselor, 4-H teacher and able to repair anything under the sun. Not being able to say “no” he was a true servant. He filled his time with helping others. George’s service truly marks his motivation. He was a patient man, a man of few words and a doer.

When the game was afoot, you would see the twinkle in his eye.

In 2022 he moved to Winnipeg to be closer to family.

A Funeral Service was held for George on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at 1:30 pm from the Grace Bible Church in Dauphin with Pastor Andrew Wiens officiating.

Interment followed in the Nordheim Mennonite Cemetery.

Should friends so desire, donations in memory of George may be made to World Vision Canada.
