Garry Dixon Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Garry Dixon announce his passing on December 24th, 2019.
Garry is survived by his wife of 42 years, Laurie, daughters Jaime Linn Anastasia and Kerri Petrea, sister Patricia Martin (Larry), children Scott and Kevin, and brother Dougal (Claudia), children Jessie and Adam, brother-in law Rick Bobby (Charlene), children Brant and Brendan and nieces Darilyn and Kelli.

Garry was born on April 4th 1948 in Swan River, Manitoba (which would later be why he got his nickname, Swanny). He grew up on the farm and attended school in Kenville, MB. Right from childhood Garry had a love of sports and the outdoors. He shared this love with anyone he was around and eventually found his way from bebe guns, to camping, fishing, hunting, and eventually guiding.Garry played on numerous baseball and hockey teams over the years, all of which brought so many good friendships into Garry’s life which meant a great deal to him.

After Garry attended the University of North Dakota, he returned to Swan River where he married Laurie in May of 1977. An opportunity arose to be the Recreation Director in Swan River, which later brought him to Dauphin, MB to work with the province in 1979. With help from the Kinsmen, the move was met with many more friendships.

Jaime was then born in 1981 and Kerri in 1984.

Many will remember Garry as Top Hat ’n Tails Chimney Sweeps, which was his first business. Garry loved his work with the provincial Government and retired in 2010, however he did not retire from helping within the community. He volunteered for many organizations throughout the years; Kinsmen, K-40, Intermountian Sport Fish Enhancement, Theatre board, and the Youth Justice committee. In that time Garry also created his own business called ‘Job Jar Solutions’ where he helped members of the community with odd jobs and he was also was contracted by Ritz Machine Works.

Garry's fight with cancer spanned many years, he was always brave and never questioned the hand he was dealt. With help from modern medicine he was able to live a full life through most of those years. He was a strong and compassionate man with a great sense of humour who touched the hearts and smiles of everyone he came in contact with. Laurie, Jaime and Kerri were by his side and  we take great comfort in knowing he is no longer in pain.

Memorial Service was held on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 1:00 pm from Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin, MB with Pastor Scott Allen officiating.
