Fred Komarniski Obituary

Fred Komarniski of Dauphin, Manitoba passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at the age of 86 years.
Fred was born in Ethelbert, MB to Dmytro and Domka (Burla) Komarniski on Sept 14, 1939.   The family faced some hardships during his early years with the passing of his infant brother, Alex, in 1945 and his mother in 1953.   At the age of 14, Fred had to leave Skala school to work on the family farm and help take care of his younger brother Morris.   Fred also worked for his farm neighbours, the Warelis, Kostyshyn and Dohan families, who would become lifelong friends.
In 1965, employment took Fred to Thompson, MB where he worked as a mechanic at Inco Mines.  There he made lifelong friendships with the Korman, Prystay, and Tomashewsky families. During his time at Inco, Fred made many trips to Dauphin to visit his father, who passed away in 1972. When Fred retired in 1995, he moved to Dauphin, where his dear cousin, the late Margaret Furkalo, and several friends were already living. Post-retirement, Fred worked at Dauphin Speed n’ Sport.  He loved his McDonald’s coffee visits with friends. He enjoyed travelling, especially taking dozens of bus tours across North America.   Fred was a skilled machinist and wood worker, spending many retirement hours in his home workshop.  One of his proudest accomplishments was to rebuild the bell tower at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Cemetery in Dry River, MB.
In 2014, Fred met Wanda Prokopowich of Roblin, MB, gaining a travel companion and life partner.  Fred was an excellent Parkland tour guide! Together they enjoyed countryside drives, road trips to visit family & friends, and bus tours to some very interesting sites.  With Wanda, came a new experience for Fred – having a family he could call his own.  Wanda was a package deal; she came with a son, daughter-in-law, and 3 grandsons!  He was such a gentleman, wanting the family’s blessing for their relationship. After meeting Fred, he won everybody’s hearts and Garry, Angela, Alec, Nathan, and Owen couldn’t have been happier for Baba and Fred.  Fred took great interest in the grandkids’ activities and enjoyed every visit and phone call.
Fred touched many hearts in his lifetime and will be remembered dearly by those who knew him.
In closing, Fred penned a few words of his own that he wanted noted in his obituary: “I would like to thank each and everyone who passed my way and contributed to my happiness and good fortune that made my life so complete.  Your kindness and consideration was greatly appreciated. Thank you.” – Fred Komarniski
