Evelyn Kukurudz Obituary

With a heavy heart, we share that Evelyn Emily Kukurudz, a pillar of strength and warmth, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on February 25, 2024, two days shy of her 88th birthday.

Born on the family homestead in the RM of Silver Creek, a short distance south of Silverton, on February 27, 1936, Evelyn was the eldest daughter of Tony and Annie Drosdoski and sister to Sylvia. She attended Stratford School and continued to high school in Angusville. On April 27, 1963, after a seven-year courtship, she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Kukurudz. They raised four children on a family grain and cattle farm.

Evelyn's life was a testament to unwavering commitment, resilience, and hard work. Understanding the importance of responsibility, work took her to various places, starting as a nurse aide at the old Russell Hospital. She then ventured to Ontario, where she worked at Abitibi Paper Mills outside Port Arthur. Returning to Russell, she dedicated many years to Wheatley's Clothing Store, the Russell Hospital, and as Coordinator for the Continuing Care Program, where she devoted countless hours to the well-being of others.

Evelyn found immense joy in gardening and was happiest when her hands were in the dirt and her heart connected with nature. At the end of a long day, she would savour quiet moments by immersing herself in the pages of countless books. With an insatiable curiosity and a deep appreciation for the knowledge and experiences that learning brings, she remained a lifelong reader. Travelling with family and friends instilled a sense of gratitude for the shared moments created, be it in Hawaii’s tropical landscapes, Branson’s vibrant entertainment scene or cruising the waters on the Shuswap. Her ability to cook and bake left her family in amazement, as she was not afraid to stray away from a recipe with astounding results. It took years to figure out her secret ingredient; she was cooking and baking for people she loved. Her grandchildren will forever cherish the memories of Baba buns, perogies, and baked treats. Baba's home was a haven of love and warmth, where she ensured her grandchildren never left without an abundance of food, a heartfelt "I love you," and a reminder to drive safely.

Evelyn’s ability to lead by example, face challenges with strength, fearlessness, and resilience, and most importantly, always moving forward inspired us all. As a friend to many, she was known for her open heart and willingness to listen. She never hesitated to lend a listening ear, a smile, a kind word, or an honest compliment.

Evelyn will be deeply missed by her children, Daryl (Heather), Dwayne (Wanda), Kevin (Kelly), and Kim (Gord). She leaves a legacy of love and devotion to her nine grandchildren, Meghan, Michael, Curtis, Karly, Kowan, Kelsey, Kally, Kaden, and Kian, along with her two great-grandchildren, Blakely and Addison. Evelyn embraced the role of Baba with pride, patience, unconditional love, a willingness to listen, and most importantly, presence.

Evelyn’s legacy lives on. She will be remembered for her love, kindness, generosity, and the indelible mark she left on the lives of all who knew her.
