Mom was born in Pine Creek on April 21, 1944 to her proud parents Martha (Neapew) and Pete Ross. She was raised in Pine Creek and she was a sibling to 12 brothers and sisters. Mom grew up learning and honing her skills of cooking and home making from her mother.  She received her formal education at Pine Creek Residential School for a number of years. She learned how to smoke fish with her mother and acquired her knowledge of daily activities of cooking and baking from her.  She had always said that her dad always asked her to make bannock.

Mom met her first husband Joe Chartrand in 1962 and together they had six kids and settled into life, they had moved to Winnipeg and Mallard where they lived until his passing in 1981.  During her years living in Mallard, Mom worked at North Star Camp and Leperre’s camp as a chambermaid as she called it. Mom than met Marv in 1982 and they married in 1983 and she moved to Skownan and Marv raised her children as his own. Mom lost her baby Bigman in 1996 after he battled Hodgkins’s disease twice, she was beyond devastated that she had to bury her baby. She continued to live in Skownan after Marv passed in 2018 and she than lost her second Son Peter in 2023 in which he died so suddenly. Mom was never the same after losing her second son. She moved into the St. Paul’s Personal Care Home in 2024, where she died peacefully in her sleep on January 22, 2025.

During her lifetime Mom liked to cook Bannock, bread and bake cakes and she loved to cut and cook wild game and was always cooking.  She always had gardens of potatoes and would make her kids pick the potatoes when they were ready and done for the season.  She enjoyed her summers in Portage doing the sugar beets. With her brother and sisters, and eventually would do this with her kids as they grew up. They always had lots of laughs. Mom’s greatest passion was Bingo, she travelled near and far to do her dabbing. She would always get ready fast and swiftly, grabbing her bingo bag like it was gold. She would always be seen at the establishments with Marv and Pochedow. Pochedow always called her a jinx because she wouldn’t win. But he always took her anyways.  She also loved her pro line; she enjoyed hockey season and had her favourite teams that she always picked and wouldn’t divulge her secrets.  She always won on that, more than her sons and she would tease them all the time because they wouldn’t win. Mom liked to read; she had a huge collection of Chicken Soup for the Soul. She loved her True Stories of perseverance and hope.  She was always reading something, whether it would be her books and/or Woman’s World or the newspaper.  Mom also loved her T.V., she had her favourite shows and one of them was the Young and the Restless. Pochedow always teased her about her love for Victor Newman, she loved her Dateline and 48 Hours, she enjoyed her true story shows and didn’t miss her episodes. She loved her Blue Bloods on a Friday night, she was very fond of Tom and Donnie. Another one of her favorites was Hudson & Rex, she loved that show and would say I seen this one already.  Mom also thoroughly enjoyed listening to her satellite radio, she tied up her hair and get into her baking mood, she’d blast her country classics, Elvis Presley and her favourite Don Williams and she was fortunate to see him live. She faithfully read and watched T.V. until her passing.  Mom loved her children, and all her grandchildren and their babies.  She held her grand Daughter Ceara in a special place in her heart as her and Marv raised her in the best way that they could.  Her great Grandson Damon became her king and her bestie. She loved him beyond measure and was always happy when he was at her place. He kept her busy and active and she always made sure he was nice and full.

Mom did her best with raising her children, instilling values in them that were paramount to her, love, forgiveness and caring. She had a strong belief in her prayers and was a devout Catholic and always said the rosaries. Her faith never waivered throughout her life.

Mom will forever be missed by her family as she lived so many years and we are all grateful to have had her that long.  Her favourite saying was, “You only live once”.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude and appreciation to the following.
