It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend Eugene Michael Steven Garlinski on August 30, 2023, at 69 years young.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 48 years 11 months, Marian (Meidl), and his five children, Edward (Eva), Tim (Charlotte), Catherine (Kirk), Michelle (Desi), and Curtis. His ten grandchildren, Garrett, Erica, Megan, Gabriella, Alex, Halie, Dino, Michael, Tavio and Peter. He also leaves to mourn his brother Tom and sister Joyce (Vince) and much loved nieces and nephews, Angela, Teren, Trisha, Caroline, Jason, Ed, Jennifer, Carrina, Tara, Benjamin, and Erin, and many more grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Eugene was born on June 19, 1954, in Dauphin, Manitoba, the oldest child of Michael and Matilda (Tokar) Garlinski. He often spoke fondly of going to the Mineral Creek School, a one room schoolhouse by Ashville, until it closed in 1967. We heard many stories of him, and his siblings walking uphill both ways in snow up to their thighs. He then attended the Gilbert Plains Collegiate where he graduated in 1972 . It wasn’t long after that when he met his brown-eyed girl, Marian Meidl. They were married on October 12, 1974. They briefly lived at Pleasant Valley, but decided to move back to the Garlinski farm in Ashville.
They dabbled in many different ventures over the years: pigs, milk cows, ducks, geese, turkeys and chickens, until they ultimately settled on beekeeping. Dad grew the Garlinski Apiary from two hives to the amazing farm it is today. Us kids all had a hand in helping over the years and even some of the grandchildren got to experience the beekeeper’s life.
Growing up, we took many family vacations out to BC, stopping in every province along the way to visit extended family. Dad and Mom enjoyed travelling in the years after we all moved away from home. Their many adventures took them to Calgary, Gillam, Ottawa, Montreal, and Prague. These trips were always planned travelling with or travelling to family. They talked fondly of the places they saw.
Eugene loved spending time with family. It was well known he would sit in his living room chair watching the chaos in the house when family was visiting until Marian yelled at us to “take it outside”. The Garlinski house hosted many family dinners with little room for sitting but always good food and laughter. The memories we have could fill so many books, we will cherish these moments forever.
Eugene survived a stroke at the end of June, sadly followed by a decline in his health and wellbeing. We thank the many staff at the Dauphin General Hospital, Grace Hospital (Winnipeg) and Ste. Rose Hospital Palliative Care ward. We can’t thank you enough for the patience and care you gave our father.
A Funeral Mass will be held for Eugene on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 11:00 am, with eulogy being read and 10:50 am. from the St. Viator's Roman Catholic Church in Dauphin with Fr. Richard Meidl and Fr. Michel Nault officiating.
Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Dauphin.
