It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Edwin Lawrence Kinne on November 4, 2024.
Born on December 31, 1940, in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, to parents Margaret and George Kinne. Edwin’s family moved to Ethelbert, Manitoba, shortly after his birth, where his father ventured into mixed farming.
Edwin received his education in Ethelbert and, following graduation, attended Red River College in Winnipeg. His studies led to a long and dedicated career with Transport Canada, where he served in various capacities across multiple departments, including the Air Administration, Defense Research Board, Canadian Coast Guard, and Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Edwin held numerous roles, from Flight Service Specialist and Coast Guard Radio Operator to Regional Headquarters Communicator, Ionospheric Supervisor, and Seaman. He also handled various administrative duties within the Coast Guard’s Relief Fleet Supply and Logistics division. Throughout his career, Edwin valued the connections he built with government agencies and private firms. His professional journeys were enriched by his genuine interest in people and their livelihoods.
In the early 1960s, Edwin played a significant role in administering telemetry operations from an Arctic Circle base for the first Canadian satellites, Alouette I and II, as well as some of the earliest U.S. satellites, S26 and S48. During his time in the high Arctic, he experienced the unique dark-season conversions and developed a deep appreciation for the local Eskimo habitat and customs. He also contributed to the Lay Day system on icebreakers assigned to the Great Lakes.
In retirement, Edwin remained active in his community, engaging in various volunteer roles. He tutored English to Francophones, supported local veterans through legion work, welcomed newcomers, and provided support to seniors. He was also a proud member of the Federal Superannuates National Association and enjoyed amateur radio.
Edwin was predeceased by his parents George and Margaret Kinne, and brother Bill of Surrey BC. Left to mourn his passing are his sister Ora and husband Orest Maryniuk, and numerous nieces and nephews.
If friends so desire, donations in Edwin’s memory may be made to a charity of their choice.
Funeral Service was held on Friday, November 8, 2024 at 10:00 am from Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin, MB with Rev. Ilene Dowd officiating. Interment followed in Ethelbert United Church Cemetery in Ethelbert, MB.
