Douglas was born September 2nd, 1934 in Larkspur Manitoba. He was the 3rd youngest of 9 siblings to Walter and Mary-Louise Thompson. In 1955 the family moved to Bacon Ridge. This is where he met his future wife Alice, they later married in 1957 at Ebb and Flow Church. Soon after they married they moved to Winnipeg where Douglas worked at Winnipeg Cold Storage for 9 years. This is when they started a family of their own. After living in Winnipeg for several years, they decided to move their family back home to Bacon Ridge.

He began working as a fisherman, where he had his own fishing outfit. He passed along his knowledge to his sons, son in-laws, nephews and grandsons and they all carried on the family tradition. While running his fishing outfit he also worked at Hillridge Special School where he worked as a janitor for numerous years. Along with all his trades he also had a passion for trapping, digging Seneca root and hunting. These valuable skills he passed down to sons and grandsons are still being practiced today.
