Doris Young Obituary

Peacefully and with family by her side, Doris Young passed away on October 8, 2025, at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre.

Doris was born to Louis and Annie (Buck) Martin on August 7, 1944, in Moose Lake. She spent her early life in Moose Lake and went to residential school in her teenage years after her parents passed away.

Doris met the love of her life, Roderick Young on a day trip to Kinosota to pick berries. He sat next to her. They were married in The Pas on December 29th, 1967. They were married for 49 years until his death.

After attending MacKay School, Doris worked as a childcare worker for McKay Residential School. She especially liked taking care of the small kids. When we were young, she worked during the night, and Dad worked during the day, so we were not left alone. Her career was cut short by a childhood injury which caused a lifelong disability; however Doris was a very capable and determined woman, and she rarely let her physical limitations hold her back.

Doris kept a beautiful yard and garden. She was proud of the home she and Rod created for their four children, who were such a source of pride for them both. She was a talented cook, and she loved having everyone gather for big meals, especially on the holidays. Doris loved to travel, especially up north to see her sisters and extended family.

The births of her three grandchildren delighted Doris, and she had a very special relationship with them all. She helped care for Joshua before and during his struggle with MS, which tragically claimed him at the young age of 24. Sara was her delight, her beautiful girl. She lit up when she saw her, even until the very last days of her life. Doris and Leland often lived many miles apart, but they stayed close with weekly phone calls, often comparing the antics of their silly cats. When her great-grandson Jaxon was born, her love flowered once again. She loved his visits and was always interested in his activities and accomplishments.

Doris was a great lover of cats. The family had many over the years, Sugar, Muffin, Sebastian, Soledad, Smudge, Seneca and Sylvia. Her very special cat was Smudge. His ashes will be interred with her.

The deaths of her grandson Joshua, her beloved husband Rod and her daughter Lisa, were enormously hard times for her. Still, she was determined to carry on with her signature strength. Her faith helped her during these times of great loss and pain.

During her last years, Aaron was Mom's constant companion. They leaned on each other and made a little life together as a tight unit of loving mother and devoted son.

Doris was predeceased by her parents, all of her siblings, her husband Rod, her daughter Lisa, grandsons Joshua and Daniel.

She is survived by her daughter Jennifer; son Mark and wife Bridget; son Aaron; grandchildren Sara, Leland, Alex, Trent; great-grandson Jaxon as well as many loved nieces and nephews.

Dearest Mom, we will carry your love and laughter in our memories and in our hearts forever.
