Obituary
Bruno Roloff, of Dauphin, Manitoba passed away due to complications from cancer on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at St. Paul's Home, at the age of 91. Bruno will be deeply missed by his children Anita Daneman, Evelyn Roloff, and Garry (Tannis Shearer) Roloff as well as by his grandchildren Eric (Shereen), Taryn, Lauren (Jeff), Erin (Luke), Ben (Emily) and his only great grandchild, Charlotte.
Bruno was born in a German community in Kamin, Poland on November 20, 1931, the son of John and Olga Roloff. The Roloff family left Poland at the end of World War II and lived in a resettlement camp in Germany before immigrating to Canada in 1948 and settling in rural Dauphin.
Bruno began working for Freiheit Construction and spent summers building cottages in Clear Lake in the early 1950s. In 1953 he married Frieda Streu. They had their first child the next year at which time he began building his own house on 7th Ave. SE in Dauphin. Two more children were born and in 1963 they decided to build a new home on River Ave. While Bruno was building this house in his spare time, he was also putting the finishing touches on the sanctuary of the new Trinity Lutheran Church, of which Bruno and Freda were charter members. In 1974 Bruno decided to form his own company, Roloff Construction. In 1986 he built his 3rd house for the family.
Over the years he developed his gift for cabinet making. Bruno did cabinetry and customized wood work for Dauphin area businesses and several churches, he installed countertops, hung drapes and blinds in many homes, repaired furniture, and offered tool-sharpening services. He was instrumental in the construction of the Trinity Lutheran Church addition which incorporated an elevator, and he also designed and reconstructed the sanctuary area. Bruno came from a generation of people who knew how to work long days and kept working until his late 80’s. Yet he always saved Sunday for church and family time. He enjoyed singing in the church choir for several years especially when the choir toured Lutheran Churches in the Parkland and Interlake areas.
Bruno and Frieda took time to travel to Germany, South Africa, Hawaii, and Cuba, from Quebec to British Columbia in Canada, in addition to some US cities.
Most important of all was Bruno’s commitment and great love for his family. The verse “Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance” from Jude 2 was the text of the sermon when Bruno and Frieda were married and this verse was engraved on a picture that still hangs in the bedroom. We were blessed by parents that lived by that verse.
Bruno is survived by his sister Martha Bessel and in-laws Mary Streu, Heather Streu, Marlene Streu, Herman and Bonnie Streu, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Frieda (2019), parents and parents-in-law, sister Bertha Rossin, and in-laws Bruno Rossin, Wilfred Bessel, Allan Allard, Ruth Allard, Nestor Leahul, Gerhard Streu, Bruno Streu, Hart Streu, and son-in-law Stan Daneman.
