Beatrice Meyer Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Beatrice Verna Meyer announce her passing at the Grandview Personal Care Home on Sunday, December 29, 2019 at the age of 101 years.

Beatrice was born in Grandview, Manitoba on February 19, 1918 to Allen and Louetta (Harkness) Shoemaker. Growing up on the family farm in the Umatilla district, she enjoyed playing and working with her brothers and sisters; Nelson, Irvin, Sadie, Thelma, Merle, Glen and Cal. Beatrice attended the Artemesia School and then continued her education in Grandview.
On November 4, 1937 she married Cecil Meyer from Gilbert Plains. Together they took over the Meyer family farm northwest of Gilbert Plains where their first two children were born, Linda and Edwin. In 1948, they moved and built a new home by the Valley River where Robyn was born shortly after; this is where Robyn and Reba currently reside.
Beatrice loved spending time with family and friends; going to square dancing; playing games especially Scrabble; bowling, winning many trophies; camping, boating and fishing at both Blue and Childs Lakes. At home she enjoyed yard work, gardening, baking (renowned for her gingersnap cookies), canning, creating and sewing multiple costumes for her children and she LOVED music. She belonged to both the Gilbert Plains and Grandview United Church Women's Groups; Beatrice enjoyed being a 4-H leader and also a Sunday school teacher.
She took pride in her work and everything she did was done to perfection. She earned several gold watches for the most points in the exhibit hall at Gilbert Plains - Grandview Ag Society fairs.  Many of her family were recipients of these prize winning homemade quilts, crocheted fancy dressed dolls, knitted afghans and sweaters from baby to adult sizes.
Beatrice loved to travel and enjoyed numerous trips around the world. Through her years of travel she collected owls, bells, spoons, fridge magnets and brass miniatures.
In 1974, Cecil and Beatrice retired and built a new home in the village of Gilbert Plains. Cecil passed away in 1987 and in 1993 Beatrice moved to the Valley Villa apartments in Grandview where she resided independently until her 100th birthday. She spent the past two years being well looked after at the Grandview Personal Care Home.

Left to cherish many fond memories are her three children; Linda (Dave) McNabb; Edwin (Donna) and Robyn (Reba); ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; step grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Eileen Shoemaker, Phyllis Meyer and Evelyn Meyer as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil, of 49 years, all her brothers and sisters and her grandson-in-law, Dale Anderson.
Beatrice was a “Classy Lady” who always 'dressed to the nines'. She took great pride and joy with all her families’ accomplishments. Everyone has their own stories and memories of times together with Beatrice.  Keep them in your hearts and enjoy them when you think of her.
