It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Baba and Great Baba Alice (Ella) Hrushka in her 97th year, at the St. Paul’s Personal Care Home in Dauphin, Manitoba on the evening of Saturday June 28th, 2025.
Mom was born to parents Dmetro and Mary Muzyka. Ella was born in Winnipeg General Hospital along with her twin brother John. Mom is survived by her daughters Peggy Lawton (Peter) and Janice; grandchildren Jen, Cuaderno( Matt); great grandchildren Natalie, Keena and Wesley. Ella is also survived by her sisters Anne (who Mom spent time with piling firewood in the garage – this was called bonding time – ha!) and Olga (who Mom went to church with on numerous Sundays.); along with many nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by both her parents Dmetro and Mary Muzyka; husband Bill of 73 years; daughter Pat; brothers Mike (Marion), twin brother John (Mary-Ann); and brother in law Peter Chita.
Ella was married in 1948 and lived on the Hrushka family farm. It was a hard, tough life. Mom did everything besides looking after three daughters. She milked cows and fed the farm animals. Mom could build a hay stack like nobodies business, ride the binder etc.
She grew a garden that could feed 4 families but that was normal. In 1973 Mom and Dad built their home in Winnipegosis. Mom worked at the Winnipegosis Hospital from October 1, 1966 to April 30, 1990 and that’s where the white glove test started – dust or no dust. Mom really, really liked to go to bingo. They moved to Dauphin in 1989, once Mom was settled she attended bingo, made new friends, worked at the Selo, still planted a garden and loved her flowers. She was known to go out for coffee with a friend (Helen) and while talking they ended up in Yorkton, Saskatchewan must have been some good coffee! She loved having the kids come home and always had their favorite foods available. Sister Anne would tease Danny that he was at Aunty Ella’s again cause she could smell the garlic, probably from meatballs.
Mom and Dad moved to Spruce Manor when Mom was diagnosed with her illness, as it progressed they moved to St. Paul’s Personal Care Home. Where they were able to live out their lives.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Matheson, Dr. Scott and all staff at St. Paul’s Personal Care Home who looked after Mom with kindness and compassion. We also would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to Stephanie Hadaway who became one of Mom’s companions in the home.
Rest in peace Mother.
