It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander Stanley Smigelsky of Roblin, Manitoba on Monday, October 30, 2023 at the age of 98 years.
Alex attended Homeland School in Macnutt for 2 years. A few months later his father moved to Shell Valley where he attended school for 2 more years. At the age of 11 he worked for Norman Mudman in Cracknell, MB on the farm. He worked for $5.00 a month. Alex, at the age of 17, in 1942 joined the army making $45.00 per month. He departed for England training as a machine gun operator. He was then sent to France and trained as a dispatch rider. Wounded in action he spent 21 days in a Belgium hospital. Alex served until 1945 when peace was declared and he was then discharged. Alex often talked about how well Canadians were honoured by everyone in battle. Alex was molded by his wartime experiences.
Alex purchased his first quarter section north of Roblin. On July 17, 1949 Alex married Irene Wavryk raising 5 children Wes, Judy, Darcy, Tracy and Perry.
In 1950 Alex started working for the RM of Shell River building roads for 32 years. Dad thanks all the Shell River people and said "God Bless You All" from the bottom of his heart.
Alex was well resepcted, an hounorable and hardworking man. He loved cattle, hunting, fishing and curling.
In 2019 Alex was panelled to the Crocus Court Personal Care Home due to health issues and resided there until his passing Oct 30, 2023 with his family present.
Alex was deceased by his parents Kost and Rosie Smigelsky, sisters Mary Smigelsky and Dora Glutyk, brothers Bill, twins Nick and Jim, John Smigelsky and grandchild Andrew Smigelsky.
Alex is survived by his 5 children; Wes (Louise) Smigelsky of Dauphin,MB, Judy (Kevin) Evachewski of Carberry, MB, Darcy (Robin) Smigelsky of Blairmore, AB, Tracy Broderick of Kelowna, BC, Perry Smigelsky of Medicine Hat, AB. He has 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Alex serviced as a soldier in WW II, it molded and shaped his entire life. It gave him the qualities of hard work, respect and honour which is his lasting legacy to his children.
A Funeral Service will be held for Alexander on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 1:00 pm from the Knox United Church in Roblin with Margaret West officiating.
Interment will follow in the Roblin District Cemetery.
