Alden Smith Obituary

Alden Fred Smith (Smitty), of Grandview Manitoba, passed away in the Grandview Hospital on the doorstep of 94 years on the 15th of March 2024.

Alden was predeceased by his daughter Cheryl Ann Kinakin, Timothy Miles Smith, and his wife of 63 years Margaret Yvonne Smith. He was a devoted and loving husband to Yvonne (Margaret) in sickness and in health until her passing in 2016.

Alden is survived by his oldest daughter Arinda Mae Olmstead Larson (Regina, SK), youngest son Perry Wayne Smith (Grandview, MB) and youngest daughter Bonny Margaret Smith (Slagelse, Denmark);  8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren

Alden (Smitty) was known for his love and great understanding of nature and was ‘at one’ with the wilderness. He enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing, gathering berries and spending time with family and his many dear friends. He loved gardening, he built several homes during his lifetime and renovated many properties. Alden was renowned for his cooking (especially Chinese food) and baking his famous pumpkin and berry pies. Alden was a plumber by trade and had an extensive knowledge of the wild fur trade, farmed organically before it was modern and was a true recycler and jack of all trades. He loved to pass down his knowledge to his children and grandchildren as well as friends and neighbors.

As a young man, he worked in northern Manitoba in the logging industry which was very hard and dangerous work.  He moved to Flin Flon, MB and worked in the nickel mine and during his time in Flin Flon met the love of his life, (Margaret) Yvonne Ballard. Alden and Yvonne were married in Flin Flin MB on the 2nd of December 1953. He served in the Canadian Army as a cook and was honorably released in January 1955.  He was an entrepreneur and had his own plumbing business, Pouce Coupe Plumbing and Heating, in BC.  In the early 1960’s he was hired by the Government of New Zealand to eradicate opossums, were he moved with his wife and at that time, 4 children. Later on in life he was hired by RM's in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan to eradicate troublesome beaver.

Aldens' last trip outside of Canada was in the early 1990's when he and Yvonne traveled to Denmark to visit their youngest daughter and help pelt mink on his son in-laws mink ranch.
Alden lived a long and active life full of family and wonderful friends as well as good food he grew himself and collected from the land. Alden will be missed. May his memory be honoured by those he knew and may he rest in peace after a life well lived.

A family service will be held at a later date.
