Adeline Smaluk

Adeline Smaluk, formerly of Dauphin, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the age of 77 years. Adeline was born on January 20, 1949, in Dauphin, MB, to the late Dmytro and Jessie Boreyko. She was also predeceased by her brother, Ron Boreyko of Brandon. She is survived by her loving husband, Ed; her daughters Jennifer (Mike) Stackhouse and Amy (Ryan) Duthie; and her cherished grandchildren Matthew, Mallory, and Macey Stackhouse, and Reese and Grady Duthie. Her daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren were her greatest blessings.

Adeline was raised on the farm in the Sifton/Fishing River area. She attended high school in Dauphin and received her certification as a legal secretary. She worked for various law firms in Dauphin, but spent the majority of her career at Johnson’s Law Office. For her, work was more than just a job. She took pride in her work and valued her relationships with her colleagues. Adeline met Ed in high school; they fell in love and were married on August 17, 1968. In 1974, they purchased their lot on Centennial Drive and built the home where they would raise their children. Jennifer was born in 1975, and Amy in 1981. Adeline loved their home, and it was always the hub for family gatherings. As Jennifer’s and Amy’s families grew, the house became more than just the place they grew up—it became the gathering spot for the whole family. Holidays, birthdays, and quiet weekends brought everyone back there, filling the rooms with new laughter and the same familiar love.

In February of 2022, life changed in an instant. Adeline suffered a severe stroke and had to live at St. Paul’s Care Home. Living apart from Ed was incredibly difficult and heartbreaking for both of them. In August of 2024, they sold their family home and moved to Brandon, MB. There, they were able to live together again at Fairview Care Home. It was a beautiful gift that they were able to spend that last bit of time together once again. It made them both so happy.

Adeline took great pride in her beautiful yard, tending her flower beds and pots with care, and decorating her garden with charming touches that made their home feel warm and welcoming. Their door was always open to welcome family and friends. She enjoyed quiet evenings watching the local nightly news, Wheel of Fortune, and The Price Is Right with Ed. She spoke with her daughters every day and kept close connections with family, friends, and neighbours through phone calls and Facebook. Family gatherings were her greatest joy, and her grandchildren were the light of her life. She loved FaceTiming with them when she couldn’t visit in person, and she always arrived at their homes with an abundance of treats. Her own home was always stocked with surprises for the kids, and she delighted in hearing about everything her children and grandchildren were doing.

Adeline was kind, loving, and a loyal friend. She was a hard worker with a gentle heart, and she adored animals of all kinds—often babysitting family pets and spoiling them with special treats, as well as caring for neighbours’ pets when they were away. She was an excellent cook, and although she often said her meals were “just a little something,” they were always generous and delicious. She celebrated every holiday with enthusiasm, and continuing traditions was very important to her. She volunteered her time with the Preservation Committee for the Historic Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection in Dauphin. Adeline just had a way of making even the most ordinary moments feel extra special.  Above all, she cherished the life she built with Ed, and all that came from it; they were true partners in everything they did, and their love for each other was deep and enduring.

Funeral Liturgy for Adeline will take place on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection (801 Jackson Street, Dauphin, MB). Urnbearers will be Matthew Stackhouse and Reese Duthie. Honorary urnbearers will be Mallory and Macey Stackhouse, and Grady Duthie. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Preservation Committee for the Historic Ukrainian Catholic Church in Dauphin.
