At the age of 87, Victoria Zanewich passed away peacefully on March 16, 2018 at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Victoria is survived by her children, daughter Terry and son Randy; and her sisters-in-law, Joan McPhee, Nel Shewchuk, Mary Zanewich, Olga Watt, Vicky Brondson, and Liz Zanewich. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband Peter in 1980, and by all of her siblings, John, Peter, Paul, William, Mary, Steve, and Walter.
Mom was born in Sclater, Manitoba on September 23, 1930. Victoria was the youngest of eight children born to Philip and Rosalia (Michaluk) Kotz. She received her education in Sclater School and then worked in Ninette, MB, Minaki, ON, and Ghost River, ON. She then returned to Sclater, Manitoba to marry the love of her life, Peter Zanewich, on October 6, 1956.
Prior to dad’s passing, mom and dad farmed on the original Zanewich homestead in Sclater, Manitoba. Mom enjoyed canning, managed a large vegetable garden, and was an amazing cook and a great baker. Her door was always open and there was always extra food for visitors. Crocheting was her passion, especially tablecloths, until she was unable to continue due to arthritis in her fingers. Victoria always enjoyed a good card game of Canasta or Rummy (the rules of the game changed often).
Shortly after dad’s passing, mom moved to Dauphin and later to Winnipeg to be closer to family.
In later years, she enjoyed the Game Show Network on TV, playing Rummy, search and find puzzles, and baking with her daughter and her niece Judy. Even in the city, she enjoyed caring for her plants (tomatoes and peppers) and flowers on her balcony.
Thanks go out to all the homecare workers who helped with the care of mom.
Mom had a great love for cats. In lieu of flowers, donations in mom’s memory may be made to: Parkland Humane Society (www.parklandhumanesociety) or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
A funeral service will be held for Victoria on Friday, March 23rd at 10:00 a.m. at the Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin, with Fr. Brent Kuzyk officiating. Interment will follow in Sclater Cemetery.
