Sophie Kostyshyn Obituary

Sophie (Warelis) Kostyshyn, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 27th, 2019 at the Dauphin General Hospital with family at her side.
Sophie was born on February 8th, 1936 to Frank and Jean Warelis. She was born on the family farm in the Ukraina district and was the youngest of four children.
Sophie received her education at Taras school. When not in school, she would help out on the family farm with whatever chores had to be done. When her sister Joannie fell ill in the early 1950’s, Sophie spent a lot of time with her nieces, the Yaroway girls, helping Joannie raise the older girls while she battled her illness.
As a young woman, Sophie met Mike Kostyshyn. Rumour has it that they met at a dance in Ukraina. Romance was in the air, and mom and dad were united on May 27th, 1953. Soon after they married, they purchased a ranch in the Zelana area. On their new ranch they raised livestock, grain and of course kids. Over the years Mike and Sophie were blessed with the birth of their six children, Valerie, Ron, Barb, Gary, Alva, and Angie.
Although Sophie worked very hard on the farm, she always had time to cook. She loved to bake fresh bread, buns and cinnamon buns. If she wasn’t baking, she was busy making perogies, cabbage rolls, or canning something.  Her dill pickles were second to none. She was a great cook and no one ever left the Kostyshyn house hungry.
As busy as Sophie was, she always had time for her family and family was the most important part of her life. She constantly worried about the kids when they were growing up and continued to do so as they all eventually got married and moved away from home. She always looked forward to everyone coming home for Christmas, Easter or whatever the occasion may have been. There was always twice as much food as was needed and somehow everyone was able to pack into that little house on the ranch for these occasions.
In 1985 her husband Mike was diagnosed with cancer. Sophie stood beside him through the good and bad, the numerous surgeries and treatment sessions. She was a pillar of strength through these times.  Five years after being diagnosed, Mike lost his battle with cancer and passed away May 27th1990, on the day of their 37th anniversary. Sophie always talked about Mike, missed him dearly and waited patiently till they could be together again.
As Sophie aged, her grandchildren and great grandchildren became the focal point of her life. Baba enjoyed when the grandchildren and great grandchildren visited her. Watching and visiting with them would bring joy and laughter to her. They all knew she loved them.  There wasn’t a time she didn’t send a care package with their favorite food in case they wanted her tasty buns, perogies, cabbage rolls or whatever else she could find.
Sophie is survived by her six children, Val (Ray) Paziuk, Ron (Judy) Kostyshyn, Barb (Ted) Filipchuk, Gary (Linda) Kostyshyn, Alva Kostyshyn, Angie (David) Bayduza, 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren,  Amy Paziuk (Ben) Fyk - Avery ;  Ryan (Jen) Paziuk -  Riley, Karlie Regan and Lexie;  Jennifer (Ricardo) Jimenez - Gabe, Samuel and Sofia; Melissa (Kevin) Cochrane - Liam and Kolby; Corey Filipchuk - Kianna and Fianna; Houston and Eric Filipchuk; Jessica Kostyshyn (Corey )Allen - Chase; Michael and Taylor Kostyshyn;  Dallas (Heather) Bosko; Kerry and Amber Bosko; Matthew (April) Bayduza; Kara (Jordan) Hanna; Krissy and Andrew Bayduza; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Jean Warelis, her brother Matt and wife Elsie Warelis, her sister Joan and husband Nick Yaroway, her husband Mike Kostyshyn and great grandchild Kenzie Fyk.
She had a warm heart and was a loving caring person who would help anyone.  Mom / Baba we will all miss you, but you are now gone home, where you will eternally be with Dad, your loved ones and Jesus.
Goodbye Mom / Baba, until we meet again.
